KKK info.
Many planters and former confederate soldiers did not want blacks to have more rights. In 1866, these feelings emerged in the rise of a secret group called the Ku Klux Klan, whoses goal was to restore democratic control of the south and keep former slaves powerless. They beat people, burned homes and even lynched (hanged) victims , killing them on the spot as punishment for some supposed crime. The Klan attacked both black and white Republicains. The klans terrorism helped the democratic party as gun-toting Klansmen kept Republicains and blacks away from the voting polls , the democrates increased thier power.
