NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
February 13, 2020
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Happy Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day Weekend! I hope you have some fun plans for enjoying this snow over the four-day weekend. Thank you for participating in parent-teacher conferences this week (and next). A strong home and school partnership is key to students’ success. We appreciate your partnership and your time these last few evenings.
Thank you also for your flexibility and feedback about last Friday’s early dismissal. This is the first time in recent history that BVSD has called an early release for any school. We learned a lot from the first one and should we need to do one again, I know it will go smoother.
If you haven’t already, please provide feedback here to inform our next planning steps for increasing and enhancing outdoor education and activities at NES through the special Board funding. Thank you to those of you who have already completed the survey.
Have a wonderful long weekend,
Laurel

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES (Feb 10-14, 2020)
Humans must develop the skill set to be able to tune into how others feel and see the world from their unique perspective. Other people's behavior and views baffle us unless we take the time to hear their story and mindfully observe the endless nonverbal cues they are communicating. This week, students practiced honing in on both the subtle and blatant messages revealed in facial expressions and body language. They uncovered the underlying feelings conveyed in a person's tone of voice and asked themselves how they would feel in various situations if it was happening to them. Social awareness of other's feelings and needs were playfully conveyed through charades, detective & empathy games, and an escape room.
Building empathy for others is crucial if we are going to survive as a community, a country, and as a planet. When we are able to empathize, it changes our response. Read more about how to nurture these vital social skills at: Listening to What is Unsaid and Building Empathy in Children
