Positivity Project
The character card which defines Bravery and explains why it matters is attached below. I encourage you to print this card and use it as tool to reinforce the strength of perspective at home.
The Positivity Project defines bravery as acting with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary. The Positivity Project identifies bravery as voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance.
Individuals with this strength might think, feel, or act as the following:
I would prefer to try and fail, than to never try at all.
I know what I’m afraid of an take action to overcome my fears.
Knowing the right thing to do doesn’t matter if you don’t do what is right.
Some ideas for supporting bravery at home include:
Talk about characters from books, movies, or tv shows that your children enjoy watching. Ask them to identify acts of bravery their character did such as standing up to a bully or overcoming a villian.
Have your child tell you a situation when they could show bravery even if they were scared. Encourage them to act on their bravery.
Talk with your child about every day people who show bravery such as police officers, firefighters, musicians, kids who are fighting scary illnesses
Consider reading the following stories that display bravery:
Sheila Rae, the Brave by Kevin Henkes
Brave Irene by William Steig
Knowing my words & actions affect others
Next week, students will continue to build the Other People Matter Mindset by thinking and reflecting on How My Words and Actions affect others.
Did you know that everything you do and say can affect people in a positive or negative way? Think about it...Did someone smile at you today? Did you smile back?
The smallest of gestures and one kind word can change someone's entire day. We continue to encourage you to help your child build the Other People Matter Mindset by asking them to think about how their words or actions affect others. Re-framing our thinking so that things do not just center around us can be challenging but through purposeful conversations and reflections, our students will begin to think about others first in everything that they do.
Some things you can do at home to encourage your child to think about the words they use with others are:
*At the dinner table ask everyone to say something positive about everyone present. Talk about how it made you feel when others said nice things to you.
*Challenge your child to smile at someone when you are out and see if the person smiles back. Talk about how it made them feel if they did smile back or if they didn’t.
*Challenge your child to hold the door open for someone and see how the person responds. Talk about how it made them feel if they responding positively or negatively.
