Getting into the Routines, Reading and Word Study!
This caring bunch of students is quickly showing their compassion and helpfulness by learning and helping each other settle into new routines.
We have established three in class word study groups that are busily learning new spelling patterns. Each student has a choice tic tac toe to finish weekly as he or she prepares for a weekly quiz each Friday. Our goals are to be able to spell, syllabicate, and identify the meaning of our weekly words.
In reading workshop we have encouraged each other to "Read Ourselves Awake" by paying attention to the details of vocabulary and plot sequence. We will begin partner reading of fantasy novels this week.
Please remember that our reading log is kept on the first three lines of our planner. Each night we are to read at least 30 minutes and discuss this with our parent/guardian who will then sign the agenda. Of course, schedules may make this impossible at times. The goal is to complete 150 minutes in each seven day week. This saves paper and helps us stay organized.
Virginia Studies--Review of 4th Grade Lessons
This Friday we will conclude our review of Colonial Virginia and Virginian geography with the presentation of our cultural landscapes projects. During the week, the students will venture into making digital products that showcase their understandings to date. Look for samples to come.
We will switch to Science and begin our study of fifth grade geology on Monday, September 8th.
