Cougar Connection
November 2020
And the winner is...
A word from Mrs. Tryon
I want to thank you for the amazing support you have shown during September and October. It's evident by how each student and parent has partnered with our Keith staff to put the health and safety protocols in action. The positive, nurturing culture at Keith is a direct reflection of this outstanding, kind community. This has not been easy and we thank you parents for strength and encouragement.
We are so excited to welcome some of our connect Cougars back to campus! If your child is moving from connect to face-to-face on Nov. 9th, we are thrilled and ready to make their transition a smooth one. We are providing an optional drop off for supplies on Friday, Nov. 6th from 2-3 pm. Parents can bring all of their students supplies, folders, journal, warm-ups, handwriting book, study guides, laptops, etc. to Keith and drop them off. Stay in your car and a staff member will come to you and place your child’s supplies on a cart. Parents, please label your child’s items with their first and last name, grade and teacher. A staff member will deliver the materials to their teacher Friday before the end of the day. This process is optional but we hope this will make it easier on the students returning on Monday, Nov. 9th. If you can’t make this day and time, we will see your child on Monday and help them get to their classroom with their supplies.
The district has informed us that there will be a delay in Schoology based on the experience of our middle and high school students had when they returned to campus. Teachers will email a zoom link to connect virtual students into the classroom, but students won't have access to assignments in schoology for 1-2 days. We appreciate your patience as we all work through the transition time. We will get through this too.
Remote Learning Day for all Keith Cougars Tuesday, November 3rd
This is a reminder that Tuesday, November 3, 2020 is a Remote Learning Day for all students.
All Keith Cougars:
- Face-to-face students will receive paper assignments on Monday, November 2nd to be completed on Tuesday, November 3rd from home. (No devices are needed in order to complete the paper assignment for our face-to-face students.)
- Virtual students will complete assignments in Schoology on Tuesday, November 3rd from home.
- Attendance will be taken by showing evidence of completing the paper assignments and/or when virtual students log into Schoology and complete their assignments.
Please call if you have any questions.

Fencing Update
Some of CFISD's security fences will have card-access gates that will be locked during school days. These gates will be unlocked after school hours and on non-school days to allow the community access to playgrounds when school is not in session. Some of the gates do not have card access features.
More about campus security fencing can be found in the brief video at https://youtu.be/a35HmNw4omQ .
As this project nears completion, I will follow up with our Cougar community to share gate access times as we want to continue to have our parents, bike riders and walkers access our campus during arrival and dismissal times. Thank you for your patience as the district works diligently to ensure our schools offer the safest possible learning environment. Learn more about campus security fencing at www.cfisd.net/safety .

Spelling Bee Registration
SUBJECT: Register your child for the Keith Elementary spelling bee program (Grades 3-5 only)
Dear Parents,
This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow Keith Elementary to host a school spelling bee program, whether your child(ren) is learning in classrooms or remotely from your home.
In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold one competition through online spelling tests. The first step to spelling bee participation is for you to register for the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com. Please complete registration by November 8th. The actual test will not be available until after this date.
I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htXzjpnMijc
Once you have registered, I will be able to assign the appropriate grade level test to your child. Your child must complete the test before Friday, November 20th. These tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The student with the highest score will be our school champion.
Our school champion will then move on to represent Keith in the CFISD regional spelling bee program. The district spelling bee will be an in-person event to be held at the Berry Center on February 2, 2021. The winner for Keith must be willing to participate in person at the district event.
The first step to spelling bee participation is to register at online-test.spelling bee.com. Please register at your earliest convenience as I will begin assigning tests to students on November 10th. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions about our school spelling bee program. I look forward to having your child compete to represent our school!
Sincerely,
Pam Michaelis
