The Brickies showed EXCEPTIONAL COURAGE over the last 7 days and appear to be fully invested in the journey towards becoming the best version of themselves! I think Hobart wrestling coach Jason Cook (also a Purdue graduate) would agree that this is what paves the BrickRode to success ... giving the total effort to improve, which takes courage, and reach as close to your potential as possible!! If the Brickies can continue to do this, the 2022-23 fall season is going to be fun. I encourage all of you to come on out to a ballgame and see for yourself!!
Let's turn everything else off for the next 5 minutes ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Soccer
WHAT A WEEK for soccer! Mark Up ... the Bricks were running on all cylinders this past week!
Girls
On Wednesday night, the Lady Brickies hosted Michigan City High School for a non-conference matchup on Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard. Early on, play was very competitive as each team tried to seize control. In a physical first half, Hobart led 2-1. After an inspiring halftime speech from Coach Provins, it was ALL BRICKIES in the final 40 minutes as our girls outscored the Lady Wolves 3-0 to earn a hard fought 5-1 VICTORY!! Sophomore Piper Ellenberger recorded her 2nd hat-trick (3 goals) in as many games ... senior Viv Garcia & junior Ella Freimuth also added scores as Hobart remained undefeated on the year! Ellenberger and junior Rachel Gillins each had an assist and senior keeper Rylee Cotton finished with 3 saves in the win.By winning their only contest of the week, the Lady Brickies improved to 3-0 on the year! Northwest Crossroads Conference play begins next week. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!
Boys
Tuesday, the Brickie futbol team traveled to Hammond Central to face the Wolves. Playing at Hammond's new facility for the 1st time, the Bricks found the back of the net first and led 1-0 at the break. As play resumed in the 2nd half, Hammond tried to mount a comeback, but our boys FOUGHT HARD every step of the way and were able to squash each Hammond rally! In fact, Hobart outscored the host Wolves 4-2 over the final 40 minutes of play to bring home a THRILLING 5-2 VICTORY!! Junior teammates Carlos Gayton and Liam Deel each scored twice for the Brickies and classmate Thomas Martin added 1 after a PERFECT pass from fellow junior Luke Weinman V from about 30 yards out! INCREDIBLE!! Junior goalie Parker Glass was lights out in the net as he registered 9 saves on the night!
On Thursday, #4 Hobart traveled to face #1-ranked Chesterton in a rematch of the 2021 IHSAA Sectional final won by the Trojans by a 7-2 score. In a FIERCELY competitive contest, the scoreboard showed a 1-1 tie after 40 minutes! The 2nd half intensity surpassed that of the 1st half as each team gave it everything they had! The Trojans scored with roughly 8 minutes left and held on for dear life as our boys continued to put pressure on the goal. Unfortunately, as amazing as the collective Hobart effort was, Chesterton edged the Brickies 2-1. Gayton scored for the Brickies and Glass had 10 saves in the net. Chesterton may have come out on top on the scoreboard, but our boys learned a lot about themselves and what they are capable of - WHAT A GAME!
To finish off a busy week of competition, the Brickies faced their 2nd pack of Wolves in 5 days - Boone Grove. Fortunately, this time it was in the Friendly Confines of The Brickyard as opposed to another Wolves Den. You know what they say ... HOME SWEET HOME! Sophomore Eddie Udave torched the Wolves for 4 GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLS in leading the way towards a convincing 6-1 VICTORY!!! Freshman Adrian Stojkoski also got in on the action with 2 goals of his own! Gayton recorded 3 assists, Deel and sophomore Gavin Guess each added another assist and Glass turned away 7 shots on goal in the win.
The Brickies are now 3-1-1 on the year and will also open up NCC play next week as they travel to Munster. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!!

In the 9/10 race, the Lady Brickies placed 3rd out of 11 schools with freshman Cassie Cohen earning 1st place after running a new PR of 19:48!! Classmate Millie Massie also finished in the top 25 with a PR! For the 11/12 race, Hobart was led by junior Ella Hornak who crossed the tape in 15th place overall to help our girls finish 7th as a team! All 3 of these individuals brought home some hardware with all top 25 finishers earning a medal. AWESOME WORK LADIES!!
Boys
With a team LOADED with underclassmen, the Bricks ran EXTREMELY well and put 5 of 6 runners in the top 25 of the 9/10 race! Sophomores Felix Lopez (3rd) and Kolin Gladney (6th) both finished in the top 10 ... freshmen Durgon Click (9th) joined them and classmates Lu Cohen (14th) and Ethan Murchek (16th) also logged top 25 finishes to earn medals and help our boys place 2nd overall! In the 11/12 race, juniors Owen Stankich (9th) and Vinnie Gutierrez (17th) also brought home some hardware with top 25 finishes as Hobart placed 6th overall.
Like I stated earlier, the Brickies SHINED in Michigan! For the day, there were 18 season best times, 11 lifetime best performances, and 10 medalists when you combine the boys & girls teams!! PURE AMAZING!!
Hobart will host the 82nd ... that's right, I said 82 ... Annual Hobart Invite on Tuesday. This will be the FIRST Hobart Invite to be run at the Hobart High School campus on 10th St!! Should be an exciting day with some GREAT races! LET'S GO BRICKS!!!

Football
On Friday night with the entire Hobart Pop Warner NATION looking on, the IHSAA Class 4A #14-ranked Brickies hosted the IHSAA Class 5A #1-ranked Merrillville Pirates at Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard. On the opening kickoff, senior kicker Ryan Pimentel sent a pooch kickoff to about the 30-yard line and the Brickies recovered to take possession! On the ensuing play, sophomore quarterback Noah Ehrlich sailed a pass over the Pirate defense to a wide-open Cody Johnston in the endzone for a TOUCHDOWN!!! 12 seconds into the game and Hobart was up 7-0! For the remainder of the half, each team threatened, but Merrillville was the only one to put any more points on the board and after 24 minutes of play, the Bricks lead 7-3! The 2nd half continued to showcase each squad's D-D-D-DEFENSE - both BATTLING HARD to gain an edge. Ultimately, Merrillville was finally able to break through ... scoring once in the 3rd quarter to take a 10-7 lead ... and then again about midway through the final period to secure a 17-7 win.
Statistically, senior back Trey Gibson and Ehrlich combined for 145 yds on the ground, Johnston finished with 3 catches for 64 yds & a TD, and sophomore Willie Shearer led 3 Brickie defenders in double-figures in tackles with 11!! Junior Bradley Gibson & senior Gavin Miller each had 10 total tackles.
Hobart is now 0-2 on the year with both losses coming against IHSAA Class 5A Top 10 teams. The growth from Week 1 to Week 2 was evident and our boys are just getting started!
Griffith visits DON HOWELL FIELD this upcoming Friday as we induct a new member into the HHS Athletic Hall Of Fame! ALL MY LIFE ... I WANNA BE A BRICKIE ... you know the rest :)

Volleyball
On Monday, Hobart hit the road to take on neighborhood rival River Forest in Bill Logan Gymnasium. Early on, it was ALL LADY BRICKIES as our girls throttled the Ingots in the 1st set 25-12! RF rallied in the 2nd set to tie things up at 1-1 with a nail-biting 23-25 win. Hobart regained control in the 3rd to win 25-15 and then closed the door with a DOMINATING 25-12 victory in the 4th and deciding set!! Senior Gabby Tomich led Hobart with 23 kills on the night while junior teammate Abby Roper added a double-double with 13 kills and 18 blocks! Freshman Kalli Butcher finished the night with 48 assists, 32 digs and 6 serving aces to help our girls improve to 6-2!
Tuesday, the Wheeler Bearcats visited The Friendly City for the Lady Bricks' 2nd contest in as many days. In a competitive match throughout, Hobart was able to slowly seize momentum ... winning the 1st set 25-22, the 2nd 25-20, and then finishing things off in the 3rd with a 25-14 win to earn the VICTORY!!
Hobart is off to a GRRRRRRREAT start at 7-2 overall on the season! NCC play opens Monday @ Highland. WE GOT THIS!!

Boys Tennis
The Hobart racketeers were scheduled for two matches this past week. Unfortunately, a late start to the season for the Hammond Academy Hawks forced a postponement on Wednesday ... the reschedule date is September 13th. Therefore, instead of a deuce, the Bricks only match of the week was on Thursday against NCC foe Kankakee Valley.
Thursday, the Brickie boyz opened up the NCC slate vs. Kankakee Valley. Playing their 1st home match of the season, Hobart BATTLED HARD against the Kougars! Hobart picked up 2 wins in singles play by junior Jacob Lewis (#2-singles) and sophomore Levi Snyder (#3-singles) and KV earned hard fought wins at both doubles to tie things up at 2-2 with one match still to be determined. Senior #1-singles player Cam Gonzalez was FANTASTIC in his matchup with KV #1 Jeremiah Jones. Cam won the 1st set ... Jeremiah the 2nd ... and you know what that means - 3RD SET BABY!! As daylight turned to dusk, these two warriors left it all on the court. Unfortunately, it was Jones who gained the upper hand and earned the win. Hobart coach Kenny Walsh had this to say, "Both teams played a great match ... great points by both sides."
The loss stings, but with such a young BAND OF BRICKIES on the court, a close/competitive match should help our boys grow some whiskers and the experience will no doubt help them down the road!
Hobart is 0-2 so far this fall and 0-1 in NCC action. This group is still finding their footing, but they are showing MARKED IMPROVEMENT each time out! This week will be BIG - WE ARE HOBART!!

Girls Golf
"Stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball." Ty Webb
The Lady Brickies have been doing a good job of letting things happen out on the course.
On Tuesday, Hobart headed north to face Bishop Noll at Lost Marsh Golf Course and earned the VICTORY as sophomore Piper Ellenberger (yes ... the same girl who scored a hat-trick for girls soccer) and junior Jesse Neace each shot a personal best round! Collectively, the Lady Bricks were practically throwing darts out there as they shot a SEASON BEST team score to pick up the win!!Friday, our girls were back out on the links ... this time it was on our home course of River Pointe against Hanover Central. On a beautiful Friday afternoon for some golf, the Lady Wildcats kept it in the fairway, hit a few more greens in regulation, and left town with a 241-257 win. For Hobart, Neace led the attack with a team-best 62 ... sophomore Laila Perschau was next to sign her card with a 63 in the loss.
For the year, Hobart is now 4-3 and still 1-1 in the NCC. With the Northwest Crossroads Conference Championship meet taking place in just over a week, the excitement is REAL!!
