Eminem (Marshall Mathers III)

He overcame poverty and bullying to become a Grammy winner

Eminem's Childhood and Background

When Eminem was an infant his father left him and his mother alone in Detroit. As he got older, he would try to contact his father but he would never be acknowledged by him. While growing up, his mother could never hold down a job for more than a couple months, resulting in the Mathers family falling into poverty and spending a lot of time in housing projects around Detroit. Marshall and his mother would come and go between Missouri and Detroit, making him switch schools two-three times a year. During school Marshall's best subject was English, but sadly he was bullied by other students. By age seventeen, Eminem has dropped out of school. Despite dropping out, he always had a love for English. In 1999 Marshall got married to a woman of the name Kimberly Scott and their marriage only lasted a matter of two years before the divorce, but they has three children together. Then in 2006 they got married again then divorced again later the same year. To this day Eminem has gone from rags to riches, showing that anyone from any background or zip code can make something big of themselves.

Eminem's conflicts were character vs. character and character vs. self.

Character vs. Character~

One of his conflict situations was character vs. character because growing up, he didn't have a father figure and his mom was a drug addict. Also the kids at school bullied him.

Character vs. Self~

His other conflict situation was Character vs. Self because with the kids bullying him and no one to tell, he kept a lot of his anger inside, just building up.

His resolutions for the conflicts was, using his love for English and built up anger to start a Hip-Hop career that would make him a 'Rap God' and an artist that will be remembered for many years to come.

  • By June of 2014, Eminem had been up for 505 awards and won 340 of them in an almost 20-year career
  • Eminem has won 15 GRAMMYs and one Academy Award
  • He has sold 42 million digital singles in the United States alone and sold 172 million albums worldwide

Memorable Quote and Life Theme

"You gotta find that inner strength and just pull that (stuff) out of you. And get that motivation to not give up and not be a quitter, no matter you just wanna fall on your face and collapse." -Eminem

I think this quote goes with Eminem's life theme because he could have given into the life his mother had and went down a horrible path, but instead he made something out of his life and showed anyone that they can do anything.

Life Theme- don't give up, keep going until you get to where you want to be
