Optional Spelling Practice at Home!

We will work with these words for two weeks at a time. Feel free to practice these sorts at home! Also, I will not be giving spelling tests over these words this year, but rather check with each student by checking to see if they can spell the words based on their spelling patterns.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

We are Learning

Reading

This week, we continued working on making our reading more fluent. We read familiar stories and practiced acting them out in small groups. Also, we learned that that sometimes readers read like robots. The reading is slow. The reader reads word for word, and they do not show expression as they read. We also learned that sometimes readers read like racecars. They go to fast. They do not pay attention to punctuation. They are reading so fast that they do not read with expression. We learned that we need to make our reading smooth like riding on a skateboard. We learned that these readers read a just the right pace. They pay attention to punctuation marks, and read with expression.

Writing

We have moved onto learning about opinion writing. We will learn that writers may use one, some, or all of the following multiple strategies to persuade their reader act/feel/ or think certain ways (or, in this case, read a book we favor): describe a favorite character, infer character traits from what the illustrations tell us about them, retell a favorite part of the story, or forming their writing based on the estimated level of knowledge their audience may know about the subject (or book).

Word Study

Below are the sorts we will practice in class!!

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

Math

Next week, we will begin working chapter 5, our study of money! The kids will work to identify coins and their values, learn to count the biggest coin first, and to count a group of coins. We will also talk about how to write a dollar and cents. We will begin to practice adding and subtracting money/coins. If you'd like extra practice at home you can begin chapter 5 in the HomeLinks workbook!

Social Studies

SUPPLIES NEEED! PLEASE READ!!

Second grade has been studying economics over the last weeks. We have deepened our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We will culminate our study of economics with a mini PBL where each child will build a store for our classroom community the will provide a good/service! They will then share about their creation with the class! This week we started brainstorming the business we would like to create and whether or not it provides a service/good!!

I am in need of duct tape and masking tape...lots of it!! Please send in by Tuesday!
