~A Message from Principal Fuhrer~Mensaje del director Sr. Fuhrer ~
I am hoping this letter continues to find you all well and that you and your families are remaining healthy during this unprecedented time of crisis. The longer this crisis continues, the more we miss you! I have daily conversations with our teachers and we all feel the same way ~ we can't wait to see you all again!
As we enter our third week of school closure I can report to you that I remain proud of our staff's efforts to engage your children and I continue to stand in awe at their ability to have shifted their delivery of instruction on such short notice. As I mentioned in my last update to you, this new way of teaching and learning has not been perfect but so far it has been effective for most during this challenging time. We will continue to ensure all students have the ability to participate in the learning process.
I again want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to develop expectations, norms, and consistency with this wide-ranging new method of educating elementary students.
This week our staff will be working on the next phase of our Home Learning Plans which will be more streamlined and focused to take us through this indefinite closure. Our goal is to structure a daily framework for learning, organize relevant and specific information, and create consistent grade-level lessons that will include the integration of all core subject areas, art, and physical activity. In addition, regular office hours will be incorporated into this schedule at which time students can communicate any questions they may have for their teachers. I will be messaging this plan to you later in the week.
I continue to be grateful to our teachers for their professionalism, compassion, knowledge, and flexibility these last two weeks. Just like everyone, they are grappling with this new reality and many of them are now home-schooling their own children. I received and have shared many emails of gratitude for our teachers from many of you over the last two weeks. These kind words have been the wind in the sails of our staff and I encourage you to share your appreciation with your children's teachers. We do also want to know the various challenges you have faced with regard to your child's home learning so that we can help ease them as soon as possible.
In my update to you last week I shared the following guidelines we wish to follow during school closure:
- Teachers and staff are engaging students during the regular workday. These hours are between the hours 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, in most cases. We are requesting that you honor these hours as our staff members are managing their own families during this time. "Office Hours" will be incorporated into the schedule being implemented on April 20th.
- Please feel free to communicate with your teachers but allow the traditional 24 - 48 hours for a reply. In most cases, teachers are replying fairly quickly but we need them to be able to pace themselves.
- Please stay connected to your child's "classroom". It will continue to be an ever-shifting landscape as we continue to develop our educational program.
- Please ensure your child is getting enough physical activity each day. I have posted our Physical Education curriculum website on the Grant School website under Parents>Educational Resources: https://www.sparkecademy.org/. You will need to sign-up for a free account and then go to the Course Catalog>SparkHome Free link. There is also an activity log you can download and have your child fill out. This is a fun way for them to track their exercise and diet.
- There is now an Educational Resources page on the Grant School website. This will be updated regularly. You can visit this page by clicking here: GRANT EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. Many teachers have also been sharing resources with you. We are trying to be judicious with what we share as we know you are inundated and overwhelmed with the amount of information that has been coming your way.
- Please do not visit the school campus. SMMUSD facilities are closed for the duration including after normal school hours and weekends.
As this crisis continues we understand that many families are facing financial and emotional hardship. The SMMUSD Student Services team has organized many helpful resources to assist our community members. These resources are posted in this week's Gecko Gazette (see below). If you know of a family in need of community support please contact Bilingual Community Liaison Florencia Rams or me. She can be contacted by frams@smmusd.org and I can be reached at the email below.
Finally, I again wish to make a plea to all of our parents and guardians. Please be easy on yourselves. Most of you have been thrown into the role of "teacher" without any warning or training. We understand this and are sympathetic. We are here to assist you with this challenge. Please reach out to us. I am available to answer any questions you may have or just to hear about your struggles and successes. Remember to visit the school district's website, Grant's website, and all of our social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram: grantgeckos_smmusd, and Twitter: @GrantGeckosSMM) for regular updates and information. The Gecko Gazette will be my primary method of communication.
We are all in this together and we look forward to seeing you when this is all over.
GO GECKOS!

VAMOS GECKOS!
En amistad y salud,
