Mrs. Gabbard's Class News

What happened at school this week?

Want to get your kiddo talking about what they are doing here at school? Here are a couple questions/subjects to help guide the discussion:

* How can you tell if a book is fiction or nonfiction?

* I know you made a wallet this week, let's talk about coins.

* What did you do with your friends on the Global Day of Play?

This week:

This week we explored lots of literature that involved groundhogs. We reviewed features of fiction and non-fiction text. Students used the word because to explain their thinking as they identified text as either fiction or non-fiction.

The sight words for next week are: three, four, five

Sound Cabinet: j

In math we began the week by reviewing graphing skills. We made predictions and collected data from our friends about whether or not the groundhog would see his shadow. We also began to explore money. They learned a poem to help them remember about the value and appearance of each coin. They created wallets, sorted coins, did coin rubbings and played games, all to give them hands on experience with money.

We continued to work this week on our How To writing. We learned how to act out our How To writing to make sure we did not forget a step. Students also practiced using transition words.

Groundhogs have been fun to learn about this week. They are interesting animals. Did you know that the groundhog is related to the squirrel and whistle when they are scared?

It has been a great week, thank you for sharing your children with me!

Discovery News

Hello wonderful parents! This is Mrs. Foust with our news from Discovery. This week we continued our new unit on Presidents. The students are beginning to learn songs for our upcoming Presidents’ Day program. For our movement day, students met Popcorn the Dolphin while doing yoga. They seemed to really enjoy the yoga poses! For an upcoming activity, I am asking that students please bring in a penny. If your child would like to bring in a few extra, that would be great!

Pennies For Patients

Newsletter Blurb:

Thorpe Creek Elementary students will be taking part in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program from February 1-12. During this program, students will collect money to support LLS’s mission: to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. Students will learn about service, leadership, philanthropy and how they can make a difference by changing patients’ lives. TCE has its own online giving page that students, parents and faculty can share with friends and family: http://events.lls.org/pages/in/ThorpeCreekElementarySchool

Thank you in advance for helping LLS to create a world without blood cancers!

Activities for the second week:

Feb. 8th – bring in more spare change throughout the week

Valentines

Children may bring in Valentines for our class beginning on Monday. My only requests are they bing in valentines for everyone in the class (24 kiddos) and they are not addressed. By leaving them not addressed students can pass out their valentines independently. We are looking forward to celebrating a day of friendship together!
