The last week of the 3rd quarter is upon us as we prepare to welcome more in person students on April 19th for the 4th quarter. Here is a friendly reminder of some upcoming important dates:


  • End of 3rd Quarter is this Thursday, April 15, 2021.
  • No Classes on Friday, April 16, 2021.
  • 4th Quarter begins Monday, April 19, 2021.
  • Parent teacher virtual conferences will be held virtually on Wednesday, April 21st. Teachers will communicate with you regarding a schedule time.

CPS SCORE! Focus on Fitness Program

The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Office of Sports Administration (OSA) is excited to offer the six-week CPS SCORE! Focus on Fitness program for 5–8 grade students this spring from April 19–May 28. The Focus on Fitness program is designed to provide a fun physical fitness program open to students who are learning both in person and at home. Students attend the program two days per week for an hour scheduled after school.


The first two weeks (April 19–30) will be a tiered exercise program based on students’ skill level and interests, with a special focus on strength and conditioning training. Students will then take what they have learned and apply it to the remaining four weeks (May 3–28) as part of an exciting running program.


Further information will be shared to our 5th-8th grade students.

Spring State Assessments (IAR, ISA, ACCESS)

Every year, Chicago Public Schools administers federally-required state assessments that not only demonstrate how our students are growing academically compared to their peers across the state, but also help us determine where additional school support and resources are needed. This year, eligible students will be required to take these assessments in person at school, including students who are learning remotely. As we continue to navigate our response to COVID-19, please know that our top priority is keeping our students and educators safe.


This spring, students in grades 3-8 will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), which measures student mastery of the Illinois Learning Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics in grades 3 through 8. Over the course of two to three days, students will take the IAR between April 21 and May 28, 2021. We will communicate the exact dates your child will take the IAR at school, as well as other important information, in the coming weeks.


This spring, students in grades 5 and 8 will take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which aligns with the new Illinois Learning Standards in science and helps families understand how well students in grades 5, 8, and 11 are performing academically. Over the course of one to two days, students will take the ISA between April 21 and June 11, 2021. We will communicate the exact dates your child will take the ISA at school, as well as other important information, in the coming weeks.


This spring, EL students will take the ACCESS assessment, which we use to measure their progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Students will take ACCESS between April 21 and June 11, 2021, and we will communicate the exact dates your child will take the ACCESS assessment at school and other important information in the coming weeks.


To ensure the health and safety of students and staff during in-person testing, we will follow these protocols at our school:

  • We will fully sanitize all rooms before and after testing, following the district’s enhanced cleaning procedures.

  • We will clean and disinfect computers and other equipment using the provided wipes in each classroom.

  • We will require anyone entering the building to complete an online health screener and pass a temperature check.

  • We will require anyone entering our school to wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

  • We will require all students and staff to wear a cloth face covering while inside the building, including during the test and testing breaks. Masks can be removed for eating and drinking, and strict social distancing will be required when masks are removed.

  • We will ensure students are seated six feet apart in rooms with no more than 50 people and at no more than 25 percent capacity.

  • During testing breaks, students will remain in their testing room and maintain strict social distancing.

  • We will implement restroom break procedures to ensure all students entering a restroom are socially distanced, wearing cloth face coverings, and cleaning their hands.

  • We will establish and communicate clear arrival and dismissal procedures.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. Conferences will be conducted virtually on Google Meet. Teachers will be communicating with you by the end of this week to schedule a time for your parent teacher conference.


Please remember that the end of the quarter is this Thursday and students will not have school this Friday, April 16, 2021.

Hello Everyone,


In just over a week we will be welcoming more students back into our building. This is a big change as they have been remote learning for over a year. Here are some tips to help your students if they are returning back to school:


· Establish a Routine: Students thrive when they have a routine and they will be starting a new schedule next week. Create a visual calendar for students so they know which days they will be at school and which days they will be at home. Also, start practice going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. Start talking about these changes before the first day of school if possible. Make sure you also have a morning routine like getting dressed, brushing teeth, getting your mask, and packing your backpack.


· Practice, Practice, Practice: Have your student practice wearing a mask before they go back to school and practice having them wash their hands thoroughly.


· Safety in Classroom: Talk to your student about the safety measures that are in place at school now, like desk dividers, keeping their distance, and following the arrows. Make sure to complete the health screener every morning too and take your child’s temperature before school.


· Manage Your Child’s Anxiety: The return to school can bring up feelings of anxiety for your child. They might be scared about going to school, being around other people, or just leaving the house. Be aware of signs of anxiety like: S decline in academic performance; change in eating habits; the inability to fall asleep until very late at night, and then the struggle to wake up; excessive feelings of guilt and restlessness; avoiding friends; and a change in mood such as irritability, tantrums, or emotional outbursts. Stomach aches, nausea, headaches, and obsessive behaviors such as perfectionism when performing tasks can also indicate that your child is struggling. Here’s how you can help them cope:


· Help your child identify their worries and fears, and then provide child-friendly, fact-based information to address those issues.


· Reassure your child that their teachers and parents will be there to help.


· Encourage your child to take “coping breaks” when they feel anxious, such as deep breathing, doodling for a few minutes, counting to a certain number, imagining a favorite place, or repeating coping statements such as, “It’s normal to be nervous, but I’m OK, and I’ll make it through the day”.


· Encourage your child to tell you about how their worries affected them at school, and seek out extra help from a school counselor or teacher if needed.
