Month of May Bullying Information
In the month of May, we are reviewing the learning about the differences between rude, mean and bullying, reporting vs. snitching, and how to report. In addition, we want students to understand the statistics around bullying. Bullying is not just a Middle school issue, it affects students across all grade levels. Data reports that bullying is highest in middle schools, followed by high schools, and then elementary schools. Cyberbullying is also the highest among middle school students, followed by high schools and then elementary. It is really important to keep open communication with your students regarding reporting and how things are going at school and always monitoring their online habits. Unfortunately, middle school students are not that forthcoming about what is happening at school.
Some of the barriers students face are as follows:
Being afraid of making things worse ( help your student understand that reporting is helping the situation)
Not knowing what to do or say (The staff at Vikan are all here to support you and your student along the way)
Not knowing how to report it online (District 27j uses safe to tell 1-877-542-7233 to report anonymously and Yellow Sheets while at school. Yellow sheets are digital this year and are located in your students grade level classroom)
Being afraid of other kids will make fun of them (Anonymity is important to us to keep everyone safe. We do not share students' names with other students.)
Being afraid to get hurt (WE are all here to protect your child)
Not knowing who to tell online( Reporting to safe to tell goes to Vikan administration and District level personnel.)
WE have talked to students about being part of the change. Each and every student is part of something bigger than themselves but it starts with each individual doing their part to keep Vikan a healthy, safe, supportive learning environment. Thank you for supporting your student and the Vikan Community. WE ARE VIKAN!
National Day of Silence
April 23rd is the National Day of Silence and we are asked to wear red on that day. From the One Colorado press release: "Each year, we celebrate the National Day of Silence to protest bullying, harassment, and discrimination against LGBTQ and allied young people in our schools. In a year when our community has looked so different and so many youth interactions are literally muted in virtual classrooms, we want to spend the whole week of National Day of Silence this year amplifying, uplifting, and celebrating the voices of LGBTQ young people! The One Colorado GSA Leadership Council is even starting a new tradition by asking you to show your support on National Day of Silence by wearing red masks or red clothes to speak out for LGBTQ students, whether or not you’re keeping silent."
April is Autism Awareness Month
CMAS Testing Update
We are finishing up CMAS testing this week! If your child has not taken their CMAS test you can expect a phone call to schedule a time to come in for testing. We are so close to 100% of active students completing testing! If you have any questions regarding testing or makeup testing, please reach out at clandry@sd27j.net.
Health Office Reminder
Please remember to fill out the Daily Health Screen that is emailed to you if your child is not feeling well. If your child is sick and you fill out the form, there is no need to call our office, your student will be excused. Also please notify the front office and excuse your child if he/she is absent for any other reason. We are in the home stretch! Let’s finish strong! Thank you.
