Mariner Update Parent Edition
Volume 12 Issue 29
Message to families
Mariner Family,
I love our school! Do you love your school? As promised, reading will be the focus of our time together during our weekly parent bulletin. I have a book ready for you. All you have to do is click on the link and you will get to listen and read along to this book entitled, “Catching the Moon: The Story of a Young Girl’s Baseball Dream.” There are lots of boys in the book, so don’t miss out girls and boys. Read this great story with your family. The author of the book is Crystal Hubbard and the illustrator is Randy DuBurke. The book is read by Kevin Costner and Jillian Estell. I asked my other family, the Candelaria sisters, to read this book and they gave me a little feedback. Catherine Candelaria Campos said, “I hope all of our kids read that book. It is a very inspirational book and I am a grandmother and even I was inspired by this book.” Carolyn Candelaria Vasquez said, “I hope every student and family at your school reads this book. It was so good, it made me cry happy tears.” Christine Candelaria said, “I love this book and I will read it with my granddaughter and grandson.”
Kevin Costner says something at the end of the book that is also inspiring. He says that dreams are important and sometimes you can find dreams in books and that’s what makes this story so special. It’s important to dream and you can be a lot of things in life, not just a baseball player. You could also be a person who writes a book like this. You can become a doctor and write a story about your path and your dream as a young person to become a doctor. You can be lots of things. Kevin says that’s what he loves about books. They take us to a place. We can read books in our car, in our home, in our room and books can take us around the world and we never have to leave our house. I completely agree.

Read the book with your family. Give it a try. Watch your child’s eyes light up as you are reading together. This activity will present the opportunity to read, listen and think. You can extend the activity and ask your child to speak to other family members and tell them about the book. You can have your child research, along with your support and guidance, and write about Marcenia “Toni Stone” Lyle Alberga (1921-1295), an African American girl who grew up to become the first woman to play for an all-male professional baseball team. The story is based on her real life experience. Reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking are skills that you can work on at home. These foundational skills will also support your daughter and son to go after and catch their dreams. The more practice that your child has, to develop these skills (in bolded type), the more confident they will be to attend college and to go after a career opportunity in their near future. Continue building their confidence at home. The time is now. Your children will grow up in the blink of an eye. Encourage them to become what they want to become. Expect them win. I expect your child to win, to be successful. Expect them to believe that they will learn at high levels and that they will continue to develop their learning. Teach them to practice their skills each day, to keep reading at home every day. Learning together as a family is fun. It’s special. Give your time in this area, as a parent, and your entire family will receive so much in return. Stay the course, read the course Mariner Family. Finish Strong.
