Legit Sources, Fake News, or Something In-Between
How do we and our students know if the site we are viewing is legit? Here are some look-fors and questions you and your students can ask when evaluating web-based resources.
Legit Sites
- Ends in .org, .gov. or .edu
- Images have credits
- Headlines seem direct and to the point
- Date is accurate
- Other organizations are reporting the same story
Fake News
- Images seem too good to be true
- Tons of pop-ups and banner ads
- Headlines use words like "epic", "amazing", "unbelievable"
- Date is outdated or inaccurate
Something In-Between
- Unusual URL endings (even .com) like .co or .com.co
- Says "Sponsored Content"
- Has typos and bad grammar
- No "About Us" information available
