From Tim: In praise of the box maze
I’ll probably always associate this time of year with two events – the Super Bowl and the appearance of the great Stanley Box Maze in the Hambidge Commons. It’s been the creation of Chris Lewis and his art students for many years running now. Made from cardboard boxes repurposed from the holiday plant sale, the maze is uncommonly popular with both current and prospective students alike. I enjoy watching the looks of amusement, mixed with some undeniable apprehension, on the faces of visiting parents as they anxiously await the emergence of their child from the end of the tunnel.
For years I’ve threatened to venture through the maze myself. My hesitation has been largely due to my fear that if I go through, I’ll be the last person to do so, because the design was hardly meant to withstand someone my size. But this year, I committed myself, and in I went. With many 3-4-5s cheering me on, prepared to assist in an evacuation if necessary, I army-crawled my way down a deceptively long, claustrophobic passage. The lesson for me was all about perspective: From the outside, it seems a relatively short trip, one end to the other. But inside, squirming forward on my elbows, the journey seemed interminable. Relative to many children who can pretty much run through the thing, it was.
I love the little things that make Stanley what it is. Granted, the maze is not such a little thing, but the idea is so simple, yet so effective in providing a moment of wonder, joy and excitement. I think the maze symbolizes the Stanley experience – a collection of moments, some bigger than others, that together make up a journey suited to the curious enthusiasm of the children and the families we serve.
All the best,
Tim
