What We Are Learning!
Reading
We are continuing to work through our reading unit of Toys and Play. We learned, and will review and practice, about how to participate in meaningful conversations with classmates, considered the norms and behaviors for sharing toys, and discussed and explored different ways to engage in play through the study of toys and play. As we explore toys and play with our classmates, we are learning characteristics of a good citizen and Chimborazo’s core values. Students will learn more about toys as they consider what makes something a toy and what makes a toy fun. We will be able to describe and sort our toys using specific attributes. Students will begin to think about perspective as they discuss and write about their toy and play preferences.
Math
Our main focus in math will be recognizing, representing, and writing numbers 0-5. Students will learn the value of each number and be able to represent numbers 0-5 by writing the number, drawing pictures, and representing it with manipulatives. Students will be able to answer “how many” questions, sort by amount, and read a graph with these skills.
Science
We are learning about the five senses (sight, hear, smell, touch, taste). Our five senses allow us to explore the world around us. By knowing our five senses, we can understand an object’s physical properties. In this unit, students will gain the essential understanding that all objects have physical properties, which include color, shape or form, texture, and size. Physical properties are independent of each other. Further, students will explore the idea that objects can be classified and sorted according to their physical properties.
Social Studies
Students learned to explain and demonstrate the importance of following rules and respecting the rights and property of other people. We discussed the importance of taking turns, sharing, completing classroom assignments, taking care of one’s things, respecting what belongs to others, being honest, practicing self-control, being kind to others, participating in making classroom decisions, and working well with classmates in groups. These are skills we have learned, but will continue to revisit throughout the year.
