UPDATE April 9, 2020 under Gov. Wolf's order...

Crestwood SD will be closed for the duration of the school year.

April 9, Governor Wolf released the following:

This morning, I issued an order under Act 13 of 2020 to close all public schools through the end of the 2019-2020 academic year, as defined by the local school calendar. (which for CSD is June 11, 2020)

Additionally, Governor Wolf is ordering all K-12 schools and programs, public and private, to be closed through the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts, Head Start Supplemental Assistance Programs and Preschool Early Intervention programs will also remain closed, and institutions of higher education are prohibited from offering in-person instruction.

What about Graduation for the class or 2020?

Our senior class will officially be declared graduates of the Crestwood School District on June 11, 2020.

We are in conversations with our senior class officers & student leaders, Class Advisors, health officials, and local event venues to explore our options while supporting social distancing guidelines.

The date of this event depends upon the the status of the state of emergency declaration and is fluid at this time. We will share details as soon as we are able.

  • Senior Awards/Class night and Senior Honor Society recognitions - may be embedded or combined with our graduation ceremony

How about sports?

PIAA officially ended the winter sports playoffs and cancelled the spring sports season.

See the announcement below on Twitter.

What about all of those spring programs?

Unfortunately all of the programs on our spring calendar will also look differently.

  • Spring 2020 Prom is postponed

We are in conversations with our Genetti's Hazleton

and discussion of alternative dates for our Prom are underway

  • National Honor Society
  • National Junior Honor Society
  • National Business Honor Society
  • National French Honor Society
  • National Spanish Honor Society

Will be inducting new members on paper - official ceremonies in the fall

  • Both Elem & Secondary Spring Band/Chorus concerts are postponed
  • All field trips district-wide are postponed

  • Fairview and Rice Elementary

Kindergarten Programs - TBD

6th Grade Class Day - TBD

So ... what about next year? Will we move on to the next grade? How will we pick classes?

The Governor and Crestwood SD agree that this pandemic will not negatively impact a student's progress nor promotion to the next grade.

  • While Enrichment & Review work is not graded at this time - it is still very important for students to be engaged in their school work
  • We will be putting in place measures to monitor student participation so that we can support students and remove barriers to learning
  • These expectations are fluid and as we continue to refine and grow our practices, we will inform you every step of the way

Elementary campus promotion and class assignment guidelines remain unchanged.

Secondary campus scheduling is being facilitated online through social studies Google Classrooms, Skyward Arena Scheduling, and information shared with families via smore and on the Guidance Dept website.

  • Class of 2021 - now thru Apr 17
  • Class of 2022 - Apr 13 thru Apr 24
  • Class of 2023 - *scheduled prior to closure - any questions contact your guidance counselor
  • Class of 2024, 2025, 2026 - Late Apr/early May - TBD

How about all of my stuff? In my locker? In my desk? Can we come get it?

Not yet - all of our buildings have been cleaned, sanitized, and declared closed by the Governor. Any access at this point is restricted and closely controlled to maximize safety and minimize risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.

We are working closely with health officials and discussing how to best allow for the retrieval of personal items. When a plan becomes solidified, we will let you know.

In the meantime, if you have questions or a unique need, please contact your school administrator:

Wait - some of my medications are in the Nurse's office, how can I pick them up?

The same issue as personal items in lockers/desks applies to any medication or health related supplies that are in the Nurse's office.

Contact your school nurse and principal to make arrangements.

My 7th & 8th grade kid sold Comet Cards - how can we pick them up?

The Comet Cards have been sorted by student and homeroom teacher. Early next week, your middle school student will be asked to complete a short survey in their ELA class in Google Classroom to tell us which of these three locations would be best for you to pick up the Comet Cards.

  • White Haven Public Library
  • Crestwood Secondary Campus
  • Slocum Fire Hall

Late next week, the Comet Cards will be available for you to pick up at the location you chose in the 11AM - 1PM lunch pick up line. The cafeteria staff will us with the drive-thru delivery process.

Message from Superintendent Mehalick

Thursday, April 9, 2020.

Good afternoon Crestwood Families,

I want to inform you that a short time ago we received notice from the Secretary of Education, Pedro Rivera, who announced Pennsylvania schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year.

I am sure this news will have a tremendous emotional impact on our students and families, especially the great class of 2020. I want to ensure our seniors and their families Crestwood will recognize their graduation and festivities will be planned.

Crestwood School District has demonstrated strength adjusting to the challenges our world is facing. Our early success is the result of our faculty exceeding expectations in their professionalism while improving their virtual facilitating capacities. Our families have exceeded expectations as well, demonstrating willingness to be diligent and patient. In addition to your patience and support, we recognize the hard work you are doing to help your children complete lessons, navigate virtual learning, and manage this new educational endeavor. We cannot thank you enough.

The Crestwood School District’s Continuity of Education plan has been a work in progress since late February when our administration recognized the potential need. We were proactive. We must now be reactive to the needs of our community. We understand the challenges posed by the pandemic manifest differently for all of our families. Challenges and differences aside, we all value education. Together, we have demonstrated our commitment to education is the most valuable asset to our children. So, while our Continuity of Education Plan does not mandate work be completed, we know our families will ensure their children are working to the level each family is capable. While attendance is not mandatory, Crestwood School District will be putting in place measures to gauge participation so we may support and assist our families to remove barriers to participation.

Our faculty will continue to refine and grow our repertoire specific to home based learning. As the educational leader of the Crestwood School District, I must implore our community to embrace the temporary model of education, so once we are back to “normalcy” the Crestwood School District will be well positioned to transition. We will continue to serve lunch and breakfast; more information will be forthcoming. We will continue to remove all technological barriers faced by families. Do not hesitate to contact your building administrator or school counselor for assistance.

I ask for your continued patience and cooperation. The safety and well-being of our entire community is our top priority and if we follow the orders of our Governor we will come through this together and more resilient than ever before.

You remain in my thoughts.
