Discovery Elementary is a Title I School
Discovery Elementary participates in the Title 1, Part A Program. The goal of Title I is to ensure all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic standards. As a Title 1 school, we qualify for federal grant money which we use for additional staffing, parent involvement, and staff development opportunities to help us meet that goal.
This update is intended to provide you with important information about this law, as well as your child’s education. You have the right to request regular meetings and/or information about Title 1 at Discovery. Please contact the principal if you would like more information.

Title 1 Survey
As a parent/guardian of a child attending a Title I school, you are an important part of our team. Your input is vital as we plan and implement parent involvement activities in our school. The focus of all Title I programs is to help eligible students meet the same high academic standards expected of all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status and background.
A Title I survey provides us with important information and feedback to assist us in supporting all students and families. This survey is confidential and will be used in future planning of our parent involvement programs and school events. The Title I survey will be available on October 25th, following our Title I Annual Meeting.
Orange Shirt Day - September 30
On September 30, Orange Shirt Day promotes awareness about the Indian residential school system still impacting Native American communities in the United States and Canada. Known as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the day honors the children forced into Indian boarding schools. In addition, the day also remembers those who never returned home. It honors the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrates resilience and affirms a commitment that every child matters. Learn how to participate in Orange Shirt Day on September 30.

Free Breakfast and Lunch for the 2022-2023 School Year
This year ALL students at Discovery qualify for free breakfast and free lunch daily at school. Breakfast is served before school from 8:35 - 8:55 a.m.
Due to a new state rule, many schools in Mukilteo School District, including Discovery, will provide free meals for ALL of the students attending that school without collecting applications beginning this September. A school’s qualification for the program, called Community Eligibility Provision, is based on the percentage of families with students attending that school who participate in state-funded assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC, etc. The data comes from the state database of assistance program participation.
Discovery Elementary qualifies as a school that provide free* meals for all students through Community Eligibility Provision.
Families who are not included in the state information will be asked to complete a brief Family Income Survey for each child that attends the above schools to help us confirm the school’s eligibility for free meals and other funding based on economic eligibility.
September is Attendance Awareness Month!
Attending school each day is a stepping stone to academic success. When students attend regularly, starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, they have the opportunity to achieve academically and thrive.
