April Applause Applause Honorees
Congratulations to our April Applause Applause honorees, the Ruskin girl’s soccer team!
The girl’s soccer team took first place in the Winnetonka tournament on Saturday, April 3, making it the first big win for the team.
“This group of young ladies is the hardest working group of soccer athletes I have ever coached,” said Coach Megan Codilla. “They have so much fire in them to be better every day. The comeback from not playing last year has motivated them to play hard every single practice and game.” Congratulations ladies!
Learn about SHINE, Truman's Elite Girl Group
Truman Elementary is home to one of the most unique student groups, SHINE. SHINE is an all-girl group with a vision of empowering fourth and fifth grade girls to be their authentic selves.
In the group, each girl decides her personal definition of the word SHINE. They engage in relevant topics which promote self-worth, leadership, and make an impact in their family, school and community.
“Being in the SHINE girl is like a family to me. I trust them. I listened to past stories and they encourage me to do better. They encourage me to be a leader in the future.” - fifth grade member Beynoce M.
“SHINE means a lot to me. I enjoy our special guests, especially when they talk about life lessons. SHINE is getting me ready for what’s coming in the future. Being a SHINE girl means power.” - fifth grade member Lavion H.

2021 Show Me Careers KC District Team Acceptance
A group or five Ruskin staff members will be participating in an exciting professional development experience set to take flight this summer.
The Ruskin team will represent HMC-1 in the 2021 Show-Me Careers KC program, a professional development program for educators, counselors and administrators to learn firsthand about relevant career pathways in today's business and industry settings.
The program is hosted by the Missouri Chamber Foundation and the Kauffman Foundation. Participants of the program will partake in virtual site tours, receive curriculum development and facilitation support, and learn to apply their learning into the 2021-22 school year.
Congratulations to the Ruskin team on their second year in a row to be accepted into the program! This! Thank you for your continued dedication to bringing hands-on, real-world learning experience to students!

Ramadan takes place this year from Monday, April 12 through Wednesday, May 12. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year, and is considered one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. Muslims observe the month of Ramadan as a time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and heightened devotion and worship to Allah, or God. During Ramadan, Muslims fast, abstain from pleasures and pray to become closer to God. It is also a time for families to gather and celebrate.
