VASEK'S VISION
NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 14-18, 2014
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING THIS COMING WEEK...
Math: Students will begin preparing for the second grade district benchmark in math. We will be reviewing all concepts taught in math and learning about the genre of test taking. Students will learn to show all of their work (testing style) and then choose and circle the correct answer when given choices (seems easy but many forget to choose!). The next few days will be very important review days. Please make sure that your child will be in school on April 15th, 16th and 17th especially!
Reading: On Monday, students will continue to review for the Reading benchmark, which will be given on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week, students will read tall tales, like Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill. Students will analyze, make inferences, and draw conclusions about theme and genre in these tall tales. Students will also learn about exaggerations that are tied to the actions and traits of the characters in the tall tales.
Writing: We are “Zooming in” on writing this week with our focus on Small Moment Writing (personal narratives). Students will learn to take a small moment from a special day or event, and stretch it out to write a vibrant, detailed story.
Science: This week students will measure, record, and graph weather information, including temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, and cloud coverage, in order to identify patterns in the data. Students will also identify the importance of weather and seasonal information to make choices in clothing, activities, and transportation.
PBL: Thank you to all the parents for visiting our classroom on Friday for the gallery walk of our PBL presentations. The students loved having you here and we appreciate your support.
PRACTICE TESTS
Throughout the week we noticed that students who did not prove or show their thinking would sometimes get a wrong answer. We are still working on showing our work, taking, out time, and doing our very best. Thank you for taking time to go over these practice tests with your child!
X-TRA MATH
Make sure to work hard on your 3 days of practice each week. It will pay off in 3rd grade!!
