HMS Bearcat Bulletin

February 2017

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

Sometimes February can be a dreary time of the year. The newness of 2017 has worn off a little bit and it's cold and cloudy outside. But, HHS and HMS were able to kick off February with a bang. I hope your student told you about our outstanding speaker, Eddie Slowikowski.

Eddie shared a message of Being Your Best Self. He related a story about his dad always demanding he be THE best. After taking 2nd place at the State Cross-Country Meet in Illinois, Eddie was afraid his dad would be disappointed. Of course he was elated- 2nd place out of 1000 runners was a tremendous accomplishment and his dad was bursting with pride. It was then that Eddie realized we could not always be THE Best, but we could always be OUR Best. That message is ever so important for adolescents to hear and Eddie conveyed it in a touching way, along with a little dancing.

We were able to bring this program to Hermann by partnering with the High School Student Council and making use of the Middle School Principal's Incentive Fund. Thank you for your continued support of this through Cardinal Calendar sales and Bearcats at the Ballpark.

Wednesday, February 8 is an early release day for staff professional development. Students will be released at 1:05.

The mid-quarter is on February 3. Report cards will be sent home on February 9.

Missouri Schools Read-In Day

Friday, March 10th, 11am

Blue Pride Drive

Hermann, MO

Missouri Schools Read-In Day is March 10 this year. HMS will observe the day by hosting activities that will bring about an increased awareness of the importance and benefits of reading. Reading is a major factor in determining a child's success in school, so we will be setting up "Camp Reads-a-Lot" for the day.

One of the events of the day will be a Reading Lunch. Parents and loved ones will be invited to "camp out" with their student and read over the lunch hour (11:00 to 12:30-ish); the Book Fair will also be opening that day. Please mark your calendars for the date and look for more details and lunch reservations to be sent home soon!

Student of the Month

The character trait of the month for January was Confidence. Students watched a lesson about how to develop confidence and the main idea was about having a Growth Mindset. We may not all be able to do things perfectly the first time, but we can try and we can get better. I've included the video below.
