Dear Families
Happy December! We had a great week in 2nd grade. Please check out the newsletter below to see what we've been up to!
Upcoming Dates & Reminders
What did we work on this week?
Reading: This week in reading we continued to practice making inferences as we read. We are now using this strategy to make inferences in nonfiction texts. This can help us learn even more about a topic. We will be continuing our nonfiction reading unit for the next several weeks (including after break).
Writing: This week we began learning about different nonfiction text features. We explored our nonfiction mentor texts to find examples of the following features: photographs, illustrations, captions, diagrams, labels, comparisons, close-ups, graphs/tables, types of print, table of contents, heading, glossary, and index. We will continue learning about text features, and after break we will begin our informational writing unit.
Science: We finished our science unit, Changing Landforms! Students learned how landforms can change slowly or quickly. We will begin a new social studies unit after break!
Math: We continued working on Module 4 in math. This module focuses on addition and subtraction to 200 and solving word problems to 100. Students used place value disks and place value charts to add two-digit numbers. They noticed when they had 10 ones and needed to compose a new ten. They related this strategy to the standard algorithm (we call it vertical model). They also used the chip model, which is a math drawing of chips on a place value chart. Check out the Module 4 Parent Tip Sheet to see more about these strategies and to learn how you can support from home.

Creating a New Briarwood Way - Input Requested!
We are creating a new Briarwood Way. It will be implemented next school year. This is our "Code of Conduct" for our students and staff. We categorize all of our expectations into these three "Be's." Currently, our Briarwood Way is Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be a Problem Solver. We are changing this to reflect the evolving needs of our students and community. Part of this process is to gain family member, student, and staff feedback. This is where you can offer the family member feedback! Your students will have a separate opportunity soon. Thank you in advance for taking this survey and being part of this important work. This is due Friday, December 22nd. Click here to take the survey!
Have a wonderful weekend!
