A Note from the School Nurse
Illness:
If your student is home or sent home sick with fever (temp of 100.1 or greater), vomiting, and/or diarrhea, please be sure they remain at home until symptom free for a minimum of 24 hours without the aid of any medications.
Head lice:
Please observe your child closely for signs and symptoms of head lice so that any new cases can be treated promptly. Signs and symptoms may include: frequent scratching of the head and/or back of the neck, pink to red marks on the scalp and/or back of neck, unexplainable sores and/or scabs on the scalp/back of the neck, yellowish white or brown eggs (nits) attached to strands of hair that can't be washed out or flicked off with the finger, white to graying crawling forms about the size of a sesame seed. In advanced cases the louse are larger and are a darker color. They move quickly through the hair when the hair is parted, making it difficult to detect.
The best way to prevent transmission:
Understand head lice is not contained only to a school environment.
Teach children not to share combs, brushes, hair ornaments, hats, caps, scarves, or any other personal headgear.
Individuals with longer hair are encouraged to use a ponytail holder to pull back hair when possible. Additionally, use of hair products (such as hairspray or gel) is a deterrent of nits attaching to hair roots near the scalp.
Teach children to hang coats separately - placing hats and scarves inside coat/jacket sleeves.
Clean or disinfect shared headgear (i.e., helmets) with Lysol® or rubbing alcohol before being used by others.
Conduct regular head checks of your child
If head lice are found on your child:
Communicate with the school nurse
Check others in the household for signs of head lice or nits.
Use an effective head lice treatment.
Remove nits from the head by combing. This is the most important lice control measure.
Complete nit removal is time-consuming but is necessary for successful treatment.
Remove all of the lice and nits from the environment by washing items in hot water or vacuuming. There is no need to spray pesticides at home.
Perform daily head checks and remove nits for 3 weeks until head lice are gone.
Continue to check your child weekly to detect the reappearance of lice.
If you are unsure of how to check for head lice, I am happy to check your student near the end of the day as to prevent any disruption in class during a check. Please contact me for any questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Nurse Rudolph
