PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
May 12, 2023
Dear Walnut Hills High School Families:
Each May an incredible thing happens on the campus of Walnut Hills High School: more than a thousand students take thousands of Advanced Placement exams. The numbers are impressive: Walnut Hills offers 37 AP courses, more than any other school in the state; 1,070 students took 2,475 exams in the last two weeks. The College Board tracks an analytic called the “Equity and Excellence” score, the percentage of graduating seniors who have earned a score of 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. Walnut Hills typically has above 80% of its graduating seniors who achieve a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam with the majority of students taking multiple AP exams.
While the numbers are extraordinary, they don’t tell the whole story. Students in AP courses are learning at the college-level with the support and guidance of expert high school teachers. The experience alone of being in an AP course, regardless of grade on the exam, is an excellent opportunity for students as they learn how to learn at an accelerated level. The exposure to higher level content engages their critical thinking skills in new ways and provides outstanding preparation for college. Many students graduate from Walnut Hills with advanced standing in college, which ultimately saves them tuition expenses. One of the stated goals of our school is that all students are prepared to take an AP course and learn at that level before they graduate. Our whole curriculum is based on making certain that we are intentionally building skills from the time that students arrive in 7th grade to be able to do so.
Of course, none of this success would be possible without the hard work of our students and teachers - and our testing coordinator Mrs. Maria Horn. We appreciate all of the support that our parents provide in encouraging students to challenge themselves academically.
Thanks for taking the time to read about our AP program here at Walnut Hills as it is so integral to fulfilling the mission of our school.
Sincerely,
John Chambers
