April...Month in Review
Here's a quick glimpse of some of the skills we learned during the month of April...
Reading: We have learned how to make inferences and draw conclusions about the text. Good readers use what they know from real life to help them figure out what will happen next in the story. For our phonics focus we reviewed the long o and long u sounds in words. We also practicedidentifying homophones as words that sound the same, but have a different spelling and different meaning. Ask your child to tell you some homophones that we’ve talked about in class!
Math: We learned how to identify fractions as parts of a whole. We practiced sharing equally and cutting shapes into halves, quarters, and thirds. We have practiced place value and started learning shortcuts for counting on a number grid.
Science: We have started our Collecting and Examining Life unit. We went on a nature walk to find living and non-living things. We talked about what living things need to survive. We also began our study of animals. We learned that animals can be classified into different groups and tried naming an animal that started with every letter of the alphabet.
We're Going to the Zoo!
On Wednesday, May 20th, the first graders will be traveling to the Elmwood Park Zoo. On the day of the trip each child will need to bring his/her own brown bag lunch. The bags should be clearly marked with your child’s name. Please do not send your child with a lunchbox/bag, as they will be too cumbersome to carry around the zoo. The zoo does not provide refrigerator or microwave access, so please pack accordingly.
The zoo is open during most weather conditions so please dress your child appropriately. We are asking each child to either wear a Titus Tiger shirt, or any shirt with Titus colors (yellow/gold or black). Comfortable walking shoes are a MUST!
There is no need for first graders or chaperones to bring money to the zoo. Please do not send money to the zoo with your child. Thank you for your cooperation!
In School this Week...
The Word Wall is a great writing tool in our classroom. I do not expect the students to memorize each word wall word, but they do need to be aware that the words are on the wall, so they can use them as a reference when writing in the classroom.
You will see a sheet of word wall cards come home in your child's homework folder each week. Please practice these words with your child at home. Check the Word Wall section of our classroom website for a list of our word wall words.
For the remainder of the year, our weekly word wall words will be included on our Friday spelling tests. The words will always be available on the wall; the children will need to locate them and spell them correctly.
This week's word wall words are:
can't, won't, didn't, don't, doesn't
A list of spelling words will come home each week in your child’s homework folder. There will be 6 new spelling words each week and 2 challenge words. The spelling words are chosen based on our Word Sort focus for the week.
Check the Spelling section of our classroom website for a list of our spelling words.
This week's spelling words are:
stir, dirt, first, were, fern, sister, skirt, stern
In reading this week, we are reading the story Animals and Their Babies. While reading this week we will learn the names of baby animal, and will discuss reading with a purpose. In this story, we will read to find out more infomation about how adult animals care for baby animals. We will also practice reading fluently by chunking words into phrases as we read.
In math this week we are learning all about counting on the number grid. We are practicing adding double digit numbers using a number grid. We have learned:
- when you move down on a number grid you add 10
- when you move up on a number grid you subtract 10
- when you move to the right you add 1
- when you move to the left you subtract 1.
These number grid skills are great strategies first graders can use when adding double digit numbers!
Later this week we will be reviewing fractional parts of a whole.
In science this week, we will observe the weather data we recorded during morning meeting in order to create a bar graph of April's weather. We will tally the total number of sunny, partly cloudy, cloudy, and rainy days.
Later this week we will begin learning about the characteristics of mammals and reptiles.
In the Computer Lab...
Over the past few weeks in the computer lab, the first grade students have been learning how to use Microsoft Word. The students have been practicing the following skills (new skills are in bold print):
- capitalizing the first letter in their name
- typing spelling words
- using the 'enter' button to move to a new line
- using the 'backspace' button to remove mistakes
- formatting of the text including color, size, and font
- inserting a clip art image to match our words
- printing their finished work to the appropriate printer
