Mustang Round-Up
2019-20 Cheyenne Middle School Newsletter - December
From the Principal
Dear Mustang Families,
December has arrived in a flash. Our family has quickly adjusted into the winter activities. We are trying to keep everyone on schedule for this practice or that activity without losing sight of our academic focus. The end of the semester comes very quickly after the Thanksgiving Holiday. We are encouraging our students, including my own children, to be sure they are studying and completing assignments on time to finish the semester strong. I encourage your family to keep an eye on infinite campus(grades) and canvas(curriculum/assignments). Our classes are focusing on those final objectives and lessons before the holiday break. Time is of the essence and assignments and projects need to be turned in promptly. Teachers will send out the final reminders for any final assignments and when to study for the final assessments and quizzes. If your family will be leaving early for the holiday please contact their teacher and grade level administrator to make plans for making-up work before the break. All current assignments and grades will need to be graded before December 20th.
This month provides many opportunities to experience our fine arts programs through winter concerts, performances, and auditions for our spring musical. We don’t want you to miss out on any events that our school offers. It is important to check our Mustang Round-Up Newsletter and the school calendar on the website for updated information on all events.
I want to thank all of the staff, students, and families for a great first semester! We have been presented with many new experiences this school year and look forward to continuing to learn more together. It is really a joy to work with all of you. Our Mustang family is truly the best! I wish your families a very happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!

November Student of the Month
Student ID Badges
EVERY student has been issued a Student ID Badge. Per the new District Policy, this MUST be worn EVERY day with the district-issued lanyard and the picture must face out. No personal lanyards or bling, pins, etc. can be added.
If your student does not have their badge they will need to print a temporary badge for the day as they enter the gym. It is VERY important that the student remember their badge each and every day. A temporary badge should only be needed on a rare occasion not for everyday use. If your student has lost their badge please have them come into the office with $5 to have a replacement badge made. After the third temporary badge students will serve lunch detention and on the 5th time alternative in-school placement for the day.
Please continue to remind your child to put their badge in the same spot every day so that they have it with them every day. AS they walk out the door or get into the car ask them these two things… Do you have your ID? Is your Chromebook charged?
#thinkbeforeyoupost lessons in December
As 2019 comes to a close and the new year begins, we reflect upon our year, our family and the great things a new year brings. The long holiday breaks open up a lot of free time to our students to be engaged on their personal devices and social media. We encourage our families to be aware of where those devices are during the holidays and during those late evenings. Our students can be easily drawn into situations that they typically wouldn't have engaged in personally with friends or acquaintances. We hope our #thinkbeforeyoupost campaign will help bring awareness to the mindfulness of words, pictures, and messages they compose and send through their device.
As we move into this holiday break, we hope to bring a focus and awareness to the amount of time our students are on devices and the activities they are engaged in on those devices. The focus would be to process our emotions in a healthy way and not to act or express our feelings through our devices. When emotionally posting it is important for our children to know that the use of false threats and inappropriate pictures is a federal crime. Encourage your child if they hear or see something suspicious, then say something to an adult and law enforcement. Anytime our students make bad choices with statements, posts, videos or pictures we have an assessment plan we follow at school. It is important to know that we thoroughly investigate any situation and involve law enforcement as necessary. Remember we want our workplace and school to be safe. I send my children to school in Edmond every day, and I know that their teachers and staff in our district strategically handle all safety issues with the utmost importance. As we wrap up 2019 we will be working with our School Resource Officers to provide educational lessons regarding #thinkbeforeyou post for our students in 7th grade. Your support is necessary by continuing these discussions at home. Below are some resources for your reference.
#thinkbeforeyoupost is a goal that we can all work towards each day.

FCCLA students recently volunteered at The Hugs Project. We assembled care packages to be sent to military personnel over the holidays including "hugs" ( neck wraps designed to cool heroes stationed in hot climates) so each one would get a "hug" from home.

District Policy regarding Personal Devices
We expect personal devices to be off and out of sight for the duration of the school day. Chromebooks have eliminated the need for supplementing with personal devices. In remaining consistent with our middle school practice, devices will be allowed before the first school bell at 7:40 and after the last bell at 2:40. We recognize that personal devices are part of the everyday world that we live in as well as our future, and know the incredible capability that today’s technology brings to our life. For young adolescents, it also presents many challenges. Recent research is now showing that middle school-aged students are spending an average of 4.5 hours a day on their personal devices. That number increases to 8 hours a day by the high school years. As educators and parents we see how many of our kids are immersed on social media platforms, gaming, mass(sometimes hidden) communications and other varieties of content consumption. For a great many students this creates social-emotional and/or academic challenges during school, in addition to the challenges from an instructional point of view. We are seeking to increase classroom engagement and reduce outside distractions, and we appreciate your support in this transition. If you need to get an urgent message to your child, we will be happy to help in that communication from the office.
