What's Happening in MI?
September
It's been such a short time since you last heard from me, but it is already September this week so it's time for another update in Medical Interventions.
We have been dealing with Sue, who is a freshman in college and has been sick. Today, the kids ran the DNA of the pathogen infecting her and discovered she has meningitis! Oh no! The next steps will be to determine who else on the campus has meningitis and get them treated quickly! To diagnose them, we will be running an ELISA test. For those students that do not test positive for meningitis with the ELISA test, we will run their DNA to determine what is infecting them, Once the kids have all of the students diagnosed, they will write a paper that recaps how we diagnosed them and what their treatment plan will be.
Our next concept to cover is superbugs! Most of the students can be treated with antibiotics but some bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. We will talk about how this is possible and actually create a bacteria that starts out as resistant to one antibiotic and ends up being resistant to two antibiotics. With our first bacteria lab, we will also be covering aseptic technique. After we finish this section up, we will be towards the end of September and ready for our first test.
Let me know if you have any questions!
