Tumuaki Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of Term 1. And, what a term it has been! It has been great having a relatively settled couple of weeks, seeing our students working hard in the classrooms and making the most of the fine weather.
Our learning around NZ Myths & Legends and Aotearoa Stories has been a real hit. Senior Students have written their own version of a myth or legend, and will be sharing firstly to their Senior Room peers, then then to the Junior Room and then to whānau next Wednesday. If you would like to come along to our writing showcase afternoon, it is on Wednesday 5th April @ 1 pm. We would love to see you there.
This week have have begun unpacking the Zone's of Regulation programme. We know social and emotional regulation is the foundation of well-being. You may begin to hear your child/ren speak about being in the 'red, yellow, blue or green zone'.
The idea of this programme is that our students will know how to recognise emotions in themselves, in others, and will have the skills to manage their own emotions, and respond appropriately to others emotions.
You can read below about what emotions each of the zones describe;
- The Blue Zone: Used to describe low states of alertness, such as when one feels sad, tired, sick or bored. This is when ones body is moving slowly or sluggishly.
- The Green Zone: Used to describe a regulated state of alertness. A person may be descried as calm, happy, focussed, or content when in The Green Zone. This is the zone students generally need to be in for schoolwork and for being social. Being in the Green Zone shows control.
- The Yellow Zone: Also used to describe a heightened state of alertness; however, a person may have some control while in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, nervousness, confusion, and many more slightly elevated emotions and states when in the Yellow Zone (such as wiggly, squirmy, or sensory seeking). The Yellow Zone is starting to loose some control.
- The Red Zone: Used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness or very intense feelings. A person may be experiencing anger, rage, explosive behaviour, panic, terror, or elation when in the Red Zone. Being in the Red Zone can be best explained by not being in control of ones body.
We will continue to update you on this learning, so you can consolidate this at home as well.
As we approach the school holidays, enjoy whānau time and a slower pace for a couple of weeks. We ask that you continue to ensure your child/ren are being read to and/or are reading daily and that you are finding teachable moments over this break - what ever they may be!
Noho ora mai,
Kelsie Allen

Invoices
Thank you to all who have paid their invoices so far. We understand that recent events have created some difficult times for some of our families. Please let me know if you would like to set up a payment option for your invoices. This is very easy to do.
If you are having trouble with your payments, please come and see either Sheryn or Kelsie so we can make a plan.
Absences
Hero gives you (parents) the opportunity to send through your child's absence with a click of a button. This is a quick, efficient way and gives our staff a notification and message of the reason your child is away.
This is the way we would like you to let us know if your child won't be here. If there is additional information that the school needs to know, please contact Sheryn directly.
Sickness
If your child is unwell, please keep them at home to prevent the spread of the illness.
Gastro
- "People with gastro should not go to work, school and early childhood centres until they have been well (symptom free) for 48 hours. There will be viruses in your poos for several weeks after you become well. You should continue to wash and dry your hands thoroughly after you have been to the toilet."

Te Ika a Maui Art
We got a piece of a paper with a giant circle on it. Then we drew the outline of our design on the bottom half. We got the pastels and used them to do the waves, koru and ocean. Then we had to colour the north island (giant sting ray) in black. After that we drew the sun and used warm colours to paint the sunset. We used vivid to add detail to the sun. We liked this art because it was something different and cool, and it linked to our learning about Māori Myths and Legends.

Kiwi Art
"First we had to paint the paint and then we had to draw the Kiwi. Then we had to put the beak on and then the stars and the eyes. I like my picture because it is a Kiwi and we are Kiwis." - Pippa, 5 yrs
"I had to put stars on my picture. I didn't make the beak because it was a bit tricky. I made some grass by rolling some bubble wrap with green on it. I like my picture because it is so cool and googley eyes." - Bruno, 5 yrs

Join our FOKS Committee
Our FOKS AGM will be on 27th April at 2 pm. We encourage any whānau and/or community members with a passion for fundraising to come along with fresh ideas and offers of help.
A friendly reminder that our school is 'fees free' so ALL of our students benefit from the fundraising that our FOKS do. It is important that they have plenty of support and man power.
Bulbs Fundraiser
Thank you so much for all of your support. I have ordered them and we expect them to arrive next term - sorry for the delay. This is out of our control. We made a lovely little profit of $347.

Kererū School Policies & Procedures
The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies that have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
