Fifth Grade Core Subjects (click on image below)
5th Science/S.S.
In Science, we are currently spiraling all our concepts we've covered this year. Students completed a fun escape room to show their understanding on the concepts. We look forward to discussing body systems towards the end of the month.
In Social studies, students presented in our wax museum. We transformed over 300 fifth graders into some of the most influential people in history. It is always exciting to see their hard work and research in the presentation. We are currently discussing the causes of WWI and will continue to progress through the 1900's this month.
5th Math
For the month of May, 5th grade math students will be reviewing for the STAAR test with fun games like connect four, jeopardy, and try to “escape” math class with escape rooms! After STAAR, 5th graders will learn about converting fractions to decimals and percents as well as work on fun projects like making a sales flyer or planning a road trip! We have had an amazing year of learning and plan to finish the year with lots of fun activities! Parents, we can’t thank you enough for your support through this unique school year!
5th ELA
This has been an amazing year in 5th Grade ELA. Even though the school year has been filled with challenges we never imagined, our kids have become real READERS! It has been so rewarding watching them regain their confidence and independence in reading and writing.
Please encourage your kids to read, read, read over summer break. They already love it and it is the best way to guarantee they will be ready for sixth grade!
Sixth Grade Core Subjects (click on image below)
6th Grade Science/S.S.
Social Studies
This wonderful month of showers will take our World Cultures journey south of the dry Middle East and Sahara Desert into the Sub-Saharan region of Africa. Here we will learn about Africa's plentiful resources, the diverse populations, and the legacy of Nelson Mandela. We will continue honing our map skills and studying cultures and governments in the region as well.
Science
We have learned so much about the amazing world of Science!!! It is hard to believe that we are wrapping up the end of our school year together. During May, Sixth Grade Science will be reviewing all the fascinating topics we have studied this year.
6th Math
In 6th grade Math, students will spend the month of May preparing for the STAAR test by reviewing concepts and building our confidence! After the test on May 11, we will use our 3D Geometry skills to build robots in an environment. We have enjoyed this year despite all of the challenges; we made it work and lots of learning was able to happen! We wish you all the best at York!
6th ELA
6th ELA
It's hard to believe that we are wrapping up the end of our 20-21 school year! We have seen our students grow so much this year! For the month of May, students will study media literacy and create a commercial that advertises a product they create. To create their commercial, we will study the various types of persuasion and how to promote their product. We can't wait to see their creativity!!

Notes from the School Nurse
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires a course of human growth and development to be given to all 5th & 6th grade students. This presentation will provide age appropriate information regarding the changes occurring in the growth and development of this age group. CISD utilizes the Proctor & Gamble series “Always Changing.” There are separate videos for boys and girls.
This year the presentations will be held virtually. Parents may view the appropriate video with their student and use the parent resources provided on the website. Click on the link below and scroll down to the appropriate video for your student (girl or boy).
Parents may also opt to not have their student view the presentation.

Yearbooks
Parents and students,
Our hope is to create a quality memory book for your kiddos similar to the ones in the past BUT…..we really need your help!! To make this the best book ever we are utilizing the Balfour Image Share mobile device app to allow you and your kiddo to submit pics directly to the yearbook throughout the year. In our first themed request, we would like to see the following:
Pics of your first day of school
Pics of you working in your virtual learning space
Pics of your student dressed up this week for Red Ribbon Week
We will organize the pics and try to make a spread highlighting these aspects of student life for 2021. To use the app go to the app store and download “Balfour Image Share” to your device and register your account. Please use our code, 125318.
Kind Regards,

RAINY DAY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Rainy/Cold Day Dismissal
If your student is a walker/biker they will be expected to walk or ride their bike on rainy days, unless you and your child have an alternate plan in place. If you choose for your child to be a car-rider on rainy days it is not necessary to complete a transportation change form.
In the case of severe weather (thunderstorms, lightening, blizzard) we may hold walkers/bikers until we feel it is safe for them to walk or ride home. If that does occur we will contact the parent to inform them of the delay. Bus transportation will run as scheduled.
