The Weekly Word from CDS FP - January 14-January 18, 2019
Looking Back
I’ve been very pleased to see the students wearing very warm clothes and how so many students are perfectly ready to play outdoors. We monitor the air quality, and when possible, the students have been outdoors for morning recess and lunch recess. Kids are outside playing and building with snow (when we have it!), playing games with friends, taking risks, communicating, socializing - all important to becoming more well-rounded individuals.
Please see the links below of the slideshows that were shown during the assembly.
Report cards went out on Monday, so each and every student should have shared their report card with parents. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, or Ms. Park, or Mr. Hill.
Several of our students attended the floor hockey tournament at Chadwick on the weekend. Details and photos of that will be shared by Mr. T in the next newsletter.
Day 90 of the school-year occurs on Monday. That is literally the halfway point throughout our school-year - congratulations, so far! Students last week began discussion in class about the upcoming biannual JeoparBee. This takes place for all grades in FP and is a small event that occurs in the Small Theater during the week of the 28th.
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

Field Trip
Students arrive at school as normal, for an 8am start time. After first period, students will board the buses and will return at approximately 3pm. Lab is expected to occur, and students are dismissed from school as normal, 4pm. ASP will occur, as normal.
At the Museum of Modern History, they will have an opportunity to see community places where people lived and worked as well as objects used in Korea around 40 or 50 years ago. They will also tour the Musical Instruments of the World Museum. They will have an opportunity to see different kinds of instruments and to interact with them in a 45 minutes tour.
Students from all grades are currently studying past and present events in social studies. This trip will give them an opportunity to see, interact with and compare real objects from the past to the objects they use today. For older grades, some museum exhibits display things that happened in the past in Korean history.

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring G2, and Assistant Teachers. Thank you, Ms. Garcia and Ms. Drews!
Grade 2 with Ms. Garcia
Second grade has been learning about Earth Science. We started our unit by asking questions about the Earth after observing different land and water formations and also by watching phenomena that occur. Owen asked, “Why do volcanoes erupt?”and Dalim wondered, “How do islands form in the middle of the water?” As we continue the unit, students will connect these questions to the big idea: Changes to the Earth can happen quickly or slowly.
This week students learned that Earth is made up of different layers, and the layers have a lot to do with some of the changes that occur.
Grade 2 with Ms. Drews
2nd grade has been learning about “responsibility” for their character development lesson. After listening to a book about how to be responsible, they came up with their own ideas about how they can be responsible at home and school. To Minsoo, the meaning of being responsible is “doing the right thing even parnts [parents] didn’t tell you.” Mohammed wrote, “That means you help your mom clean the room every day.” Owen wrote at school it means “picking up the trash that you dropped.”
Junyu wrote “Behave to your freid [friend] and teacher even in every one in school.”
