General News! Week of May 8th- 12th
Happy Monday!
Project Lift Off went very well last week...The students all had the opportunity to launch their rockets as well as apply the math and science skills to compile the data they were able to retrieve from those launches. It was also a good day for SMMS as we were able to take a step closer to becoming the first public school in Georgia to receive full STEM certification.
We would like to remind you that the eighth grade dance will be held this Friday, May 12th from 6:30-9:00 pm. This is a very special occasion for our eighth graders. We hope that they all will be able to attend ! Students do need to be present at school on Friday, with their library books returned, fines payed, etc. in order to attend the dance. Students also need to be aware that an ISS or OSS visit will also remove this privilege.
Next Thursday, May 18th, the eighth grade will be having a field day from 8:00-12:30. We need parent volunteers to cook hot dogs and/or help with a field day stations. Parents who would like to volunteer will need to be here by 7:30 am to watch a short video and sign a waiver. Please contact Ms. Waxman, if you would be interested in helping with this.
We would also appreciate donations of food items and other various items for our field day stations. More information will be given soon.

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week In Language Arts:
We will be taking our final Reading Inventory on Monday. Students will be able to compare their scores from our original test in August, our mid-year test, and their end of the year results. Our goal for the year is to see continuous growth, and ideally attain a lexile level of at least 1050 before 9th grade begins. Many of our students began the year at, or beyond that level, so for them our goals would ideally be to see a consistent overall growth of about 70 points or more. It is important to remember that these scores do tend to drop without some continued practice. Please encourage some SUMMER READING during our break, so they are ready to take on those high school challenges.
We are continuing to follow the story of our "Mercury 13" in Almost Astronauts. ..All research on the individual women should be completed, scripts should be in final stages, ready to be timed out, and last minute revisions made. Everyone should be ready to film their interviews this week. If all goes as planned, we will be viewing them in class on Friday and early next week. Students have been asked to really put themselves into their roles as ether the reporters, or the "almost astronauts", and dress appropriately for their interviews. Some costumes and props will be available at school, but anything you may have at home to share would be greatly appreciated.
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Monday the students will be finishing up their IXL assignments. Tuesday they have their last mastery assessment for math. They have been working hard on IXL to review for the mastery assessment. Wednesday the students will take their final math inventory. When they complete the inventory, I will print a parent report that will show what the students need to be working on over the summer. Students can work in IXL Mobymax, or Buzzmath all summer. I do not expect them to work for hours each day, but five to six hours a week will keep their minds active, and it will make 9th grade much easier for them. Thursday and Friday we will be graphing, graphing, and doing some more graphing!
Science- Mrs. Allen
Hello parents! This is Mrs. Allen. I have recently updated science grades (5/8/17). I have graded what has been turned in to me, and will continue to check what students are turning into me online, as well. Some grades from the time after I left school may be entered, pertaining to rockets, by Dr. Powell. If you have any questions regarding your child’s science grade, please feel free to email me directly. I am still communicating with parents and students, even in my absence. Thank you all for your support at home! Let’s get the kiddos through the last two weeks of school to graduation and finish strong!
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
We are wrapping up the STEM brochures covering rocketry. The brochures are do on Tuesday May 9th. The next project on deck will look into the manned missions to Mars by NASA and Space Ex a private sector company led by Elon Musk.
