December Citizen of the Month

Congratulations to James for being chosen Citizen of the Month. He can always be found following the Bloomer expectations. He is trustworthy, responsible and makes smart choices all day long. He exhibits self control everyday in the classroom. He is able to control his actions when others around him are struggling to do the right thing. He is definitely a leader and not a follower.

James makes a difference at Bloomer everyday by being a positive influence for his friends. He always has a smile on his face and will politely greet you in the hallway. He is responsible and makes sure his work is completed on time.

Math Workshop

December brought more new learning in Math.

We spent much of December working on the order of operations and a little Christmas math fun. We still need lots of work on multiplying and dividing larger numbers accurately!

We also took the 2nd District Math assessment of the year which brings a reason to celebrate. This assessment measures student growth on standards all year long. After the first assessment only 1 student was Proficient, we now have 5 students scoring in the Proficient range. 5 students also moved from the Below range to the Basic range! Way to go 5th Graders!

Continue to work on reviewing basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts at home.

Reading and Writing Workshops

Reading fluency is a major part of comprehension. The faster your child can read the words on the page, the better their comprehension of the story is. The January goal for 5th grade is 150 words per minute. The goal for the end of the year is 160 words per minute. We practiced our fluency the past few weeks by preparing a few holiday reader's theaters. We presented them to our first grade buddies in 1K and they loved hearing the stories. Please keep practicing at home! A way to practice at home is to set a timer (microwave) for 1 minute. Read a piece of text and mark where you're at when the timer goes off. Reset the timer and reread the same piece of text trying to get farther this time.

We have moved on to a fun genre to study, historical fiction! The kids are loving learning about history as they read some amazing books. We're just getting started so stay tuned. We've even have a historical fiction story in the works!

Science and Social Studies

In Social Studies we finished up our study of early America and moved on to the early explorers. We also learned about the newest character trait at Bloomer...self control.

Saying Goodbye to Ms. Larsen

Ms. Larsen's time with us has come to an end. It was hard to say goodbye. We made sure we sent her off in style though. Thanks to everyone who donated to her teacher bag and made sure she had a few supplies to help her get a new classroom up and running. She left with many books, pens, pencils, post it notes and a stylish bag to carry it all in. We learned a lot from Ms. Larsen these past few months. She will still be around the halls of Bloomer this Spring as she will be filling in for Mrs. Smith in Kindergarten when she has her baby. Until then the kiddos are praying for me to get sick so she can come back and spend a day with them! =)
Goodbye Ms. Larsen

Safety Patrol Schedule

Here are the Safety Patrol schedules for the the next few weeks. Remember that if your child is on patrol they are needed at school by 8:30 each morning and will remain on duty until 3:45. If there is an emergency and your child will need a sub to fill in for them, please email me so I can let Mr. Sortino know.
