Godley Station Stallion News
2022-2023 Vol. 8 September 19, 2022
Principal's Note
We have a busy week of teaching and learning here at Godley Station! We are continually working on the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) in all subjects. I encourage our parents to look over the state standards on the Georgia Department of Education website, here. https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards This link has information about all the standards for each subject and each grade level. This is a great way for parents to see exactly what their children need to know and be able to do this year. I hope our parents find this information helpful.
This week, we are doing a "Pickles and Popcorn" fundraiser. This was rescheduled from last week. We pop the popcorn fresh. Pickles and Popcorn cost $1. Pre-K-4th Grade will have Pickles and Popcorn on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 5th-8th grade will have Pickles and Popcorn on Thursday, Sept. 22.
We also have a Non-Uniform Day on Friday, Sept. 23 to raise money for Safety Sacks. This Non-Uniform Day can be paid for through Venmo @GSSPTO (please choose "Family and Friends"). We ask that our families not send cash, but please use the Venmo app because it simplifies the process. Safety Sacks are a bag for each classroom containing safety and first aid items. The Safety Sack will travel with the class everywhere they go throughout the day (playground, cafeteria, etc.) This is another safety enhancement we are putting in place for our students.
Educationally Yours,
Eric Heady, Ed.S.

Transition From High School To Work
We have a new item for our students this week. It’s our Bang Bang Shrimp Po’Boy. This sandwich is served with a nice portion of popcorn shrimp on a warm hoagie bun. Students will also be offered condiments including boom boom sauce. YUMMY!
September 14th was the last day that students can “piggy back” off of the prior year’s status. If a new meal application was not completed and processed by that day, the student’s status was changed to paid ($3.00). Apply for free or reduced lunch at myschoolapps.com.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
Have a fantastic week!

Nurses Notes from Nurse Davis and Nurse Polite-Heyward
Dear Parents/Guardians of Kindergarten and 7th Grade Students,
The deadline for shots/immunizations is approaching very quickly. The Department of Public Health will be conducting an audit of students in these grade levels. If your student is not up to date by 9/30/2022, they may be at risk for withdrawal. You may make an appointment with your child’s pediatrician, with the health department (912-356-2441), or with the Curtis V. Cooper van that will be at the school on 9/13/2022.
There is a link with how to sign up below for Curtis V. Cooper and it is also under the Counselor’s newsletter information. In order to get your child an appointment with the Curtis V Cooper van, all documentation must be received 4 (four) days before their appointment. Documentation needs to be emailed to christa.eallonardo@sccpss.com. Parent or Guardian must be present for immunizations with the Curtis V. Cooper van.
If you have just moved to Georgia, your child’s records from the previous state, need to be placed on a Georgia immunization form. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the Godley Station nurses.

Parent Information regarding Medical Alerts
Dear Parents/Guardians,
To ensure that your child remains healthy this school year, we, the nurses of Godley Station, need your assistance. There are many children flagged with medical alerts in PowerSchool. If your child has asthma, severe food allergies, diet restrictions, or has a seizure disorder we need your attention. Please contact your child’s doctor, to obtain action plans for your child. The action plans need to be on file in the clinic. The medication needed for your child’s condition needs to be brought in and signed into the nurse’s office by a parent/guardian as soon as possible. We have had some children that have had asthmatic complications and their inhaler was not signed into the clinic. To avoid your child having a serious medical complication, please obtain the correct documentation as soon as possible. We thank you for your cooperation in advance.

Regular School Attendance Matters
Reminders from the GSS attendance committee:
· Please remember to send in parent notes or other acceptable documentation (such as a doctor’s note, military orders, court paperwork, or obituary) if your child is absent.
· Parents can excuse up to 5 days per school year using a parent note if a student is not feeling well, but does not visit the doctor. Emails can be considered parent notes.
· Students are considered truant after 10 days of unexcused or unverified absence. Unverified means no communication has been received in regard to the student’s absence.
· Notes and documentation regarding absences can be submitted as hard copies or via email to your child’s teacher or our information specialist adriann.wright-bailey@sccpss.com.
· You can monitor your child’s attendance on the PowerSchool parent portal.
· Tardies - Students are considered tardy if they arrive at school later than 7:30 am. Parents must escort tardy students to the main office doorway to sign them in. Repeated tardies may result in a referral to the school social worker.
· If your child has an ongoing medical condition that is impacting their attendance, please contact their grade level counselor:

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Safety is our top priority. We need all families to work with staff members to ensure the safety of our students and staff is maintained.
For School Bus information, visit the www.sccpss.com website and click on the Family and Students tab.
MORNING ARRIVAL
Drop-off begins at 7:00 AM. Students may not be on campus before 7:00 AM because there is no one to supervise them. It is very dangerous for students to be dropped off early without supervision.
We have two drop-off areas. Cars may enter through the Benton Boulevard (cafeteria side) entrance and drop off in the area in front of the Kindergarten hallway. People who live in the Highlands will probably find it most convenient to use this entrance. Cars may also enter through the Spring Lake (gym side) entrance and go through the traffic loop surrounding the parking lot. People who live in Spring Lake or The Farm will probably find it most convenient to use this entrance.
Our instructional day begins at 7:30 am. Students arriving at 7:30 am or later will be marked tardy, and parents must walk them to the front door to sign them into school. Please note that after five tardies, the teacher and/or Attendance Committee will refer the student to the school social worker to provide support for the family.
PLEASE NOTE: Parents may not park and walk their children in to the school on the first day. It would be very chaotic and unsafe having that many parents trying to park and enter the building at once with all the traffic. We cannot screen that many people properly. We will have staff members on hand to walk our young students to class. Our staff will make sure everyone gets to their classroom safely. Parents who did not attend Open House can schedule a time to meet with the teacher if they would like.
AFTERNOON DISMISSAL
Dismissal begins at 2:30 PM. All cars enter on the gym side of the building through the Spring Lake entrance. Go through the traffic loop surrounding the parking lot. Everyone must remain in their cars at all times.
NO CARS MAY ENTER THE CAFETERIA SIDE ENTRANCE FROM BENTON BOULEVARD IN THE AFTERNOON. That entrance is for buses and daycare vans ONLY. It is dangerous for cars and buses to be mixed in that area, and we need to keep the area free of cars to make room for emergency vehicles.
Walkers: Walkers should be walking all the way home. If your child is not walking all the way home, you need to come and pick up your child at the school the correct and safe way. Parents should not be meeting walkers in their cars. This is very dangerous and could result in a child being hit by a car or a child being picked up by an unauthorized person. Please, do not meet your child in your car, but come and pick your child up from the school in the car rider line where we can keep them safe. Parents who are meeting their children on foot have a waiting area at the sidewalk directly in front of the flagpole in front of the school, up by the wooded area near the street.
Those who are picking up students at the school must have a car tag. Car tags will be assigned at Open House and on the first day of school. Anyone picking up a student from campus must have their car tag or be prepared to present a picture ID to the staff.
We CANNOT release any students without a car tag or ID for the protection of our students. We CANNOT release any students to a person who is not listed on the child's pickup or emergency contact list in PowerSchool. Parents with PowerSchool access can update their child's pick-up list at any time.
Please be patient during car pick-up! The first week or two, the carpool line moves slowly until the students learn the new routine.

PowerSchool Parent Access
All our parents and guardians need access to PowerSchool. We are no longer printing paper report cards.
Be a Part of Your Child's Education Every Step of the Way
Find out what’s going on at your child’s school anytime, anywhere! With PowerSchool’s Parent Access, you can read announcements, catch up on your students’ class assignments, checkout grades, attendance, and discipline.
How do I start to use Parent Access?
Let your school know you are interested in seeing your child's information online. Once you are properly identified, your student's access ID and password will be provided. Each child will have a separate access ID, and you will need to link each to the account you create in Parent Access. Instructions for using the Parent Access portal will be posted on this website. Your school will be the point of contact for support. Issues that require escalation will be handled by the school and central support.
Electronic Device and Cell Phone Policy
The school board policy on using electronic devices, JCDAF-R(1), can be read in the 2022-2023 Student Code of Conduct on page 64.
Cell phones are a major source of disruption in the school setting. We have had instances of inappropriate use of phone cameras, cyberbullying, and cheating due to cell phone use. We need to work together to protect our children from the disruption caused by cell phones at school.
We are sensitive to the fact that many parents want their child to have their phones at school in case of extreme emergencies. While we discourage parents from sending phones to school with their children, parents may do so under board policy. However, under the same policy, students must follow all school personnel's directions regarding using personal devices.
At Godley Station K-8, student cell phones must remain powered OFF at school. Students are to leave their powered-OFF phones in their backpacks. Cell phones may not be taken into sensitive areas such as bathrooms and locker rooms. Cell phones that are powered ON at school at any time, including recess and lunch, will be taken up, and students will be subject to appropriate disciplinary actions.
FIRST OFFENSE: Personal electronic devices will be taken up and returned to the student at the end of class or the day. A student conference may be held on the proper use of electronic devices within the school environment.
SECOND OFFENSE: Personal electronic devices will be taken up, and the parent/guardian will be called to retrieve the device. A parent conference may be held on the proper use of electronic devices within the school environment.
THIRD OFFENSE: Loss of privilege within the classroom and/or school for 30 days. A behavior contract signed by the parent and the student on the proper use of electronic devices may be required before the privilege is reinstated.
Parents may not call or send texts to their child's phone while they are at school because the child's phone must be powered OFF. If a parent needs to communicate a message to their child while at school, the parent may call the school office at (912) 395-6000. The office staff will be happy to help. If a child has a serious need to contact a parent while at school, the child needs to communicate that need to his or her teacher and leave the cell phone powered OFF.
Parents, we ask for your help and cooperation in having a school that is free of disruptions caused by inappropriate cell phone use. Let's work together to keep our kids safe and focused on the right things while at school.
Godley Station K-8 Uniform
With the understanding that student behavior is influenced by the way students are dressed and that no student should dress in a manner that is disruptive or has an adverse effect on school activities, the following mandatory uniform standards have been developed. Students are expected to dress in the school uniform during the school day, on field trips, and during school-related activities. Godley Station K-8 uniform colors are as follows: Pale blue or white uniform shirts; khaki or navy uniform bottoms. We have a plaid option for uniform skirts.
Please refer to the SCCPSS Code of Conduct for full details regarding uniform guidelines and expectations. Please be reminded of the following:
- Crocs, flip-flops, and other insecure shoes are not allowed for safety reasons. Shoes must be closed and properly secured or tied.
- Hoodies and hooded sweatshirts are not allowed.
- Hats are not allowed.
- Jackets must remain unzipped in the building.
If a student arrives at school out of uniform, it will be documented, and the student will have the option to:
Change clothes into a supplied uniform and remain at school, or
Call home for a change of clothing, which must be delivered to the front office by 9:00 a.m.
At this time, students are not allowed to wear hooded sweatshirts or "hoodies". They will be asked to take it off in the building.
Students with repetitive uniform violations will be subject to disciplinary action.
