January 2022
Happy New Year!
I hope that all of you enjoyed your semester break. We are looking forward to having our students back in the building with us, but please know that students will be virtual as we start this semester. Students should log into itsLearning to complete assignments on Thursday, 1/6 and Friday, 1/7. The assignment will be asynchronous, meaning that lessons will be posted but instruction is not live.
Within this newsletter, you will see our students participating in a variety of programs that showcase their many talents. We are proud of the work of our students and are happy to highlight their accomplishments.
At the end of first semester, we received feedback from teachers and students that Tutorials are not long enough to make up a classroom exam or lab. In an effort to meet the needs of our students, we will run a different bell schedule the last Thursday of each month. This schedule will combine our two tutorial periods into one long period where students can make up longer assignments. The schedule on that day will be 2nd, Tutorial, 4th, and 6th. Again, this schedule will only run once each month. We will also be soliciting feedback from parents and students later this semester about bell schedules for next year.
Please encourage your students to keep up with assignments this semester and to get off to a great start in January. We are honored to have a chance to work with your children and are excited to see all that they will accomplish in 2022.

COVID Mitigation Updates
- Masks are encouraged for students and staff. We will have masks available for students in the front office.
- No visitors will be allowed on campus during the school day.
- A virtual format will be used for all meetings, including IEPs, 504s, parent conferences, etc.
- Transition meetings and parent nights will move to a virtual format during this time.
- The courtyard will be open during all lunches to add spacing to the cafeteria. On inclement weather days, students will be asked to eat in their classrooms.
- When we are informed of a positive COVID case, contract tracing will occur, and parents will be notified if their child was sitting within 6 feet of a positive case. It will be the parents' decision as to whether to quarantine an exposed child who is free of symptoms.
- Please use this link to report positive cases of COVID.
- Extra cleaning and disinfecting will occur each night to help with the spread of germs.

Our Vet Science Program also placed 1st in the North Region Competition.
Extra Help and Makeup Opportunities
Tutorials: Each week we have four tutorials where students can go to sessions offered by their teachers to get extra help or to makeup assignments they have missed.
Dane Academy: Our next Dane Academy session will take place on Saturday, 1/15 from 10a-12p. Dane Academy allows students an opportunity to make-up tests or work on missing assignments. Students are referred to this session by a teacher based on class progress. If your student has missing assignments or tests in a course, please be on the lookout for communication from the teacher regarding referral to this session.

To qualify, students must complete a Pathway Verification Form and turn it into their honor society sponsor by February 17th, 2022. If a student qualifies for a medallion in multiple areas, they will receive a “pin” for each additional pathway. Students will only receive 1 medallion.
Midyear Reports
Counselors will be working to process midyear reports for ALL Common App schools once all first semester grades are posted on transcripts. Midyear reports should be completed by the end of January. If your student needs a midyear report submitted for a non-Common App school, please have them email their counselor.
Georgia Scholar: Due February 15, 2022 at noon
Click here for the 2022 Georgia Scholar application form. The application is due Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at noon. 10th Grade Tutorial Videos
Last year, the counseling department put together a library of video/resources for students and parents/guardians to review if they have counseling questions. Click here and scroll down to see short videos on your student’s credit check, medallion information, YouScience, Bigfuture Search Engine, HOPE Scholarship/Grant, National Merit, etc. If you have specific questions regarding your student’s credit status or postsecondary plan, let your counselor know.
Dual Enrollment
Is your 10th or 11th grader interested in participating in dual enrollment next year? We will be having a DHS specific Dual Enrollment Information Night on February 10th at 6pm. Mark your calendars for this mandatory meeting!
If you would like to review dual enrollment information, it can be found on our website. Students must apply to the college of their choice by April 29th, 2022.
Junior Classroom Guidance
Counselors will be meeting with all junior students next week to review postsecondary options. As part of the Bridge Bill, students are required to save 3 postsecondary options to their plan on YouScience.
YOUSCIENCE
Has your child completed a YouScience Assessment? YouScience contains a series of brain games that measure a student’s aptitude(s) and combines it with your student’s career interests. At the end of the assessment, your student will have a comprehensive list of careers that are aptitude fits, interest fits, and overall fits. Our goal is to have all of our students complete this assessment by January so that we can review it with them. This assessment will help us to answer the question “What skills and knowledge do I need for my career” as we start looking at postsecondary options.
We would like to encourage parents/guardians to have their child login to the assessment to complete or review the results as soon as possible.

Important Reminders
Lockers for PE:

Drop Off of Items / Deliveries:
Parents are NOT allowed to drop off any items for students, with the exception of prescription medication that is housed in our clinic.
Check Outs:
Check ins and check outs to school occur through our attendance office. Students are not permitted to simply leave campus; all students must go through the attendance office when leaving campus outside of their regular dismissal times. Please note, students are not permitted to check out after 3:15 PM.
Drop Off Before School / Pick Up After School:
Parents must drop off students in front of the main entrance both before and after school. This year, we ask that you arrive no earlier than 3:00 PM to pick up your student after school in the car rider line. During dismissal, if your child is not physically present when you arrive in the pickup line, you will be directed to circle back around the parking lot to keep traffic moving and minimize congestion.
Breakfast and Lunch Information:
All students will receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each day. These meals are provided through the Cares Act (COVID Relief Federal Package).
Payment:
We ask that all parents set up an account with MyPayments Plus if you have not already done so. We prefer online payment in lieu of cash whenever possible, including lunch accounts.
Student Parking:
We are fortunate to have ample parking on campus for all students who wish to drive to school. Detailed information about parking is available on the Parking Application webpage.
Transportation for students enrolled in FVA / GAVS Part Time, Dual Enrollment, and/or IE2:
Students who are enrolled in FVA / GAVS part-time, Dual Enrollment, and/or IE2, and come to Denmark HS for some of their classes, MUST enter the building through the front doors only. To ensure the safety and well-being of all Denmark HS students, we ask that all students in this situation arrive no earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of their first in-person class on Denmark’s campus.
