D. W. Daniel Newsletter
December 2018
Message from the Principal
It is starting to look a lot like winter at Daniel High School. The leaves are almost gone from the trees, and each week there has been a small chance that there will be snow! The students are excited for the winter break, and so are the teachers. Before we get to winter break, though, we must get through our first semester exams. Most classes at Daniel will have some sort of exam administration the last week before break. Please advise your student to start studying now- studying a little bit each day is a lot easier than cramming all studying into the night before an exam. If your student is struggling with a specific class, they are welcome to stay in our after-school tutoring program. Every week we have tutoring after school; on Thursday afternoons we even have a complimentary bus to take students home (check our social media pages or below for the signup sheet). We hope that putting into place good study habits early will prevent your student from feeling stressed out during the week of exams.
We are proud of all of our extracurricular activities at Daniel. Every fall sports team made it (at least) to their Upper State playoff. Our fine arts programs are working hard to put on wonderful winter concerts. Our clubs, ROTC, and after-school activities are all very busy this time of year. We hope that you are able to attend some of our student performances and games. They have been working hard! After a busy Fall, our students and staff deserve the two week break at the end of December.
Midterm Exams
Only students who have an A in a semester class may exempt an exam. Students enrolled in a class with an EOC will not be receiving exemption letters this year. They will not be taking a midterm, but they will be taking a test or having class as usual.

Beta Club Wrapping Party
Just to put things in perspective, our December Beta Club Meeting/Party involved about 200 students, 4 sponsors, 25 2L sodas, 15 bags of chips, 9 bags of candy, 10 containers of cookies/cupcakes, 35 Christmas bags, 65 boxes, 300 sheets of tissue paper, 30 rolls of tape, 60 pairs of scissors, 375 package labels, 60 rolls of wrapping paper, 100 bows, 36 rolls of ribbon, and 10 Sharpies. All of this was to ensure that 24 kids who might not have otherwise received gifts for Christmas will receive at least $90 worth of gifts each, and in most cases more!
Thank you to participating students and their families for helping sponsor what I believe to be the most kids we have ever sponsored in one year. Thank you to Mrs. Schaupp, Mr. Welch, and Mr. Hylkema for making the wrapping, loading, and delivery go as smoothly as possible. You all are awesome!

The Joy in Helping Others
Science National Honor Society
The Science National Honor Society hosted Dr. Eric Benson, an entomologist at Clemson University, on November 14th. Students learned about his path to becoming an entomologist and the variety of careers available in the biological sciences. Dr. Benson also shared his experiences as part of Clemson Extension in Integrated Pest Management, which took him all over Southeast Asia. He and his team met with farmers throughout Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines, discovering a more affordable and sustainable solution for pest control. Dr. Benson continues to raise and study all kinds of cockroaches, flies, and beetles at his Clemson lab. The SNHS thanks him for sharing all of his experiences with us.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, December 5th at 5:30 pm in room 339. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Nicole Martinez, an assistant professor at Clemson University in Radiological Health Sciences. See Ms. Tidwell for more information.

AP Biology
The Mobile Genetics Lab from the Greenwood Genetics Center recently paid a visit to the Advanced Placement Biology classes at Daniel High School. Two genetics researchers from the center led the classes in a procedure that involved isolating DNA, amplifying their samples with PCR, and performing a gel electrophoresis procedure. Students learned proper use of centrifuges and micropipettes. They were also shown the techniques for loading samples into an electrophoresis gel and the procedures for analyzing the results. These are all skills used in modern medical research, forensic investigations, and diagnosis of genetic disorders. Advanced Placement students take College Board exams at the end of the course that may allow them to achieve college credit.
