A Book for Each Bear (Week 2)
For the sixth year, Madison Elementary is excited to participate in A book for each Bear Program! If you are new to Madison, this is a program brought to us by our wonderful PTA. They provide each family with the same chapter book and a schedule of reading (it's about 10-15 minutes a night). The idea is to build a strong community of readers by reading together as a family and also have a lot of great discussions at school about the book.
Here is the reading schedule for next week:
Monday. October 12th Chapters IX
Tuesday, October 13th Chapters X
Wednesday, October 14th Chapters XI and XII
Thursday, October 15th Chapter XIII
We get asked a lot, "Why should I continue reading aloud to my kids when they are already good independent readers?" Here are some great reasons:
READ ALOUD so your independent readers can
continue to associate reading with warm, pleasant feelings; learn about words and language; build listening skills; expand vocabularies; talk about the characters, settings, and plot then relate them to their own lives; gain knowledge about a variety of topics.
gain exposure to a variety of writing styles and structures.
explore social and moral issues and behaviors.
become more skilled independent readers.
discover which authors and writing styles they like.
be motivated to read on their own.
have fun!

Fall Parties
We will have fall parties this year on October 30. Classroom teachers will reach out to each set of families to discuss snacks and activities for the parties. Due to the current guidelines and restrictions, we will not have a parade and families will not be able to join us this year for the fall parties. Thank you for your understanding and support.
Students will be able to wear costumes to school this day as part of our Spirit Week. Please review the costume guidelines listed below.
- Costumes must be appropriate for school. At Madison, we serve students from three-years-old (Early Childhood) to Fourth Grade. Horror and gory costumes are not appropriate for school. A good rule of thumb is to consider if a three-year-old would be frightened by a costume. If so, then it should not be brought to school. Thank you for your help in keeping our costumes appropriate for a school setting.
- Costumes and accessories resembling weapons or weapon look-alikes are prohibited at school. This includes plastic/fake knives, swords, guns, spears, etc. and any item that resembles a weapon.
- Students should wear a costume that will allow them to learn throughout the day. For example, no masks or inflatable costumes should be worn to school.
*Early Childhood Families - Please consult your teacher's newsletter for more details on the Early Childhood fall parties and schedule.
