Wrestling Finishes 3rd at State


Hewitt-Trussville Wrestling finished 3rd at the AHSAA 7A State Championship that concluded on Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. This was the second consecutive top-three finish at State for the Huskies.

Lucas Reaves won the state title at 152 pounds. Reaves opened the event with over Gabriel Emery of Grissom. In the semifinals, Reaves defeated Paxton Miller of Thompson, Finally in the championship match, Reaves pinned Manny Merrero of Bob Jones. Reaves scored 22.5 team points over the weekend.

Hunter Jones took home the state title at 195 pounds. Jones opened with a win over Tank Mays of Bob Jones. In the semifinals, Jones pinned Trace Gallman of Central Phenix City. Jones wrapped up the title with a win over Todd Whitmire of Huntsville. Jones scored 23 team points over the weekend.

Logan Reaves closed out his high school career with a 2nd pace finish at 145 pounds. He opened the event by pinning Ian Addison of Hoover. In the semifinal round, Reaves pinned Kyle Fontenot of Smiths Station. Reaves dropped the championship match to James Latona of Thompson.

Dalton Zimmerman won his consolation finals match on Saturday to finish in 3rd place at 126 pounds. Clark Box earned eight team points and placed 4th at 106. Andrew Shelton scored eight team points and placed 4th at 160. Chris Hawkins scored nine team points and placed 4th at 220.

Girls Basketball Falls in Regional Final


A successful 2021-2022 Hewitt-Trussville Girls Basketball season came to an end on Monday as the Huskies fell 59-43 in the AHSAA 7A Northeast Regional final in Jacksonville.


The Huskies finished the season with a 25-7 overall record. It marked the third time in the last four years that the Huskies had more than 20 wins. Coach Tonya Hunter's team has two state championship appearances and one Elite 8 appearance in the last four years.


The Huskies reached the regional final with a 61-45 win over Sparkman. Audre Benson led all scorers with 16 points. Jordan Hunter had 14 points, D'Yona Jones had 13 points, and April Hooks added 10 points.


In the regional final, Jordan Hunter led the Huskies with 16 points. Audre Benson and April Hooks had 10 points each.

Tonya Hunter and D'Yona Jones to Represent HT in All-Star Game


Coach Tonya Hunter and Senior D'Yona Jones will represent Hewitt-Trussville in the 2022 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. The game will be played at Mississippi College in Hinds, Mississippi on March 12.


Coach Hunter will be one of two coaches for Team Alabama. Hunter has led the Huskies to two state final appearances and one Elite 8 appearance in the last four years. Jones was one of 12 seniors named to the team. She and her teammates just completed the 2021-2022 season with a 25-7 record.

Baseball Wins a Pair on Opening Weekend


Hewitt-Trussville Baseball started the 2022 season with two wins on Saturday. The Huskies opened the day with a 10-0 win over Sardis. Later, Coach Jeff Mauldin's team defeated Southside-Gadsden 6-2.


Riley Quick won game one as he tossed six innings. Quick only gave up one hit and struck out 11 batters. Baker Green got the win in game two as he threw 5 2/3 innings. Eayn Thomas picked up the save.


Kurt Kizer had four hits and four RBI's. Jack Ollis had three hits and three RBI's. Matt Miller added three hits.

Softball Weekend Recap

HT Softball went 3-1-1 at the Sidney Cooper Invitational this weekend. The Huskies are now 4-1-1 overall on the season.


HT 2 Spanish Fort 2

Kate Hicks pitched six innings and did not give up an earned run. Hannah Dorsett and Riley Rudick had RBI's.


HT 9 Bob Jones 1

Kenleigh Cahalan was 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Riley Rudick also had four hits and she drove in three runs.


Athens 11 HT 4

Kenleigh Cahalan was 4-4 with three RBI's.


HT 13 Tallassee 6

Kenleigh Cahalan and Riley Rudick both had three hits. Hannah Dorsett scored twice and droe in two runs.


HT 11 Smiths Station 2

Hannah Dorsett had three hits and scored twice.

Girls Tennis Picks Up Section Win


HT Girls Tennis moved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in 7A Section 3 play with a 8-1 win over Oak Mountain on Wednesday. The match was played at Heardmont Park. The Huskies dominated singles play winning five of the six matches. Yasmin Fisher won 8-2 in the #2 singles match. AnnaBeth Hill (#3 singles) and Anna Blake (#4 singles) also won their matches 8-2. Talia Talley won a tight match 9-7 at #5 singles. Riley Edwards won 8-6 at #6 singles.

The Huskies swept doubles play as Isabella Hall and AnnaBeth Hill won 8-4 in #1 doubles. Yasmin Fisher and Anna Blake won 8-1 in #2 doubles, and Talia Talley and Sarah Kate Smith win 8-3 in #3 doubles.

The Huskies will compete in another section match on Tuesday when they travel to Gadsden City.

Girls Soccer Weekly Recap

Hewitt-Trussville Girls Soccer went 2-0 over the last week. Last Wednesday, the Huskies shut out Mountain Brook 2-0. HT opened the scoring in the first half when Libby Armstrong found the back of the net off an assist from Taylor Doss.


Later in the game, Katie Harbin scored the second goal off a corner kick from Jocelyn Davis. The HT defense was solid throughout as they recorded their second shutout of the season.


On Friday night, the Huskies picked up a 7A victory as they beat Hoover 4-1. Taylor Doss opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Caitlyn Mosley made it 2-0 as she scored off an assist from Jocelyn Davis. Taylor Thomas then scored off an assist from Ella Allen to make the score 3-0. AG Savage scored the final HT goal off an assist from Julia Farris.

Girls Golf 2nd at Opening Event


HTHS Girls Golf placed 2nd out of 16 teams at the Auburn Invite last week. The Huskies were led by Molly Davidson who shot a 73. She placed 3rd individually out of 83 players. Gracie Davidson shot a 76 to place 4th individually.


The Huskies are back in action on February 22 as they compete in the Helena Girls Open.
