Emerson was born on May 25, 1803 to parents Ruth Haskins and William Emerson. His father died when he was seven, leaving his mother to raise him with the help of his aunt. He graduated from Harvard when he was eighteen, then moving to St. Augustine, Florida and beginning his career. He is now one of the most highly regarded authors of the transcendentalist period.

What is Transcendentalism?

The transcendentalist movement was a movement that went hand in hand with the social and political reforms of the Jacksonian period. Authors stressed the importance of the individual conscience and emphasized nature and personal relationships with God.
