Holly Jolly Food Drive 2019
November 3rd - November 25th
St. Louis School is the largest single contributor to the Batesville Food Pantry. Without our help, a lot of families would not have enough to eat during the holidays. Last year, SLS collected over 1,200 items. NJHS has grocery carts throughout the school so drop your groceries in one of the carts and make someone's holly jolly!
Aunt Beas supports SLS Food Drive
Aunt Beas will serve as a drop off site for the SLS Food Drive sponsored by NJHS. Bring in five or more items on the list and receive a FREE greeting card. Bring in ten or more items and receive 10% off your total purchase (exclusions apply). Support our local businesses while they support our school!
Hillenbrand/Ripley County Community Foundation STEM Grant
St. Louis Kindergarten recently received a grant from the Hillenbrand/Ripley County Community Foundation to purchase STEM-based materials. Throughout the year, our students focus on several Fairy Tale units. Our goal is to tie in STEM-based activities that tie in with our literature units. The grant from Hillenbrand/Ripley County Community Foundation allowed our school to purchase Fairy Tale Kits to the following stories: The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood and The Gingerbread Man. What makes the fairy tale so special is that each kit includes a story card that presents a dilemma for students to solve. Students must plan, create and test their solutions to the problem. Our current story of the week is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students are challenged to build a chair that even Goldilocks can’t break! Our students wait in anticipation for each Fairy Tale introduced and have such a connection with each fairy tale kit.
In addition, our students received a new coding robot for the classroom- Botley the Coding Robot! Botley is geared towards kindergarten students where he teaches students to code: Screen Free! In the classroom, students are now learning how to use a remote programmer and coding cards to put Botley to the test. Our students can even create their own obstacle courses with Botley and flip the switch to black line follow mode to set a path for Botley to follow. Our students are always so eager to head to the STEM station to code with Botley!
We are incredibly honored that you selected St. Louis Kindergarten for the Hillenbrand/Ripley County Community Foundation’s STEM grant. Our students have so many fun and inspiring STEM tools in the classroom all thanks to you. We truly appreciate all you do for our students here at St. Louis!

Red Ribbon Week
We are very thankful to the Batesville Drug Coalition for helping sponsor our SLS Red Ribbon Week. Take a look at the pictures below showing some of the great posters our students made. We also had some very creative short essays from our students. I am sharing our 2nd grade winners' essays, as well as a couple of quotes from our 7th grade students.

Once upon a time there was a unicorn and a dragon. There names were Pixie and Dusty. They loved to be drug free. One day in Magic Land a bunch of monsters started throwing drugs all over Magic Land. Dusty and Pixie were mad! Immediately they got there glitter cannon and glitter saved the day!!!! Then they all had a glitter party to celebrate! by Hadlee King

Red Ribbon Essay Student Quotes from 7th grade
Sully Hill: "My faith and conscience can help me and my friends stay drug-free by reminding me of the right thing to do if I am tempted or pressured into a difficult situation."
Ainsley Sipples: "...the students of SLS watch out for each other. If anyone were to fall into the despair of drug addiction, someone would notice."

Powerschool Reports
They're BACK!
The weekly digest email feature from Powerschool stopped functioning last school year. We believe we have finally corrected the issue. Please feel free to go in and set this up via stlouisschool.powerschool.com if you haven't already. You can choose a weekly email that sends a summary of grades and attendance, and choose the frequency. There is also a convenient little checkbox to apply to all of your students, and you can add mom or dad in the additional email address section. This is so great and I'm glad we got it back up and running for our families. If you have any questions regarding Powerschool accounts please contact Mrs. Riedeman. jriedeman@st.louisschool.org.

Boar’s Head Festival
FROM: BATESVILLE AREA ARTS COUNCIL
A cherished community tradition, the Boar’s Head Festival will be returning to the Sister’s Chapel in Oldenburg at 7 pm on Friday, December 6th and Saturday, December 7th, reports Batesville Area Arts Council Publicity Chair Tina Longstreth. A presentation of English traditions coming to life, the Friday and Saturday shows will act as perfect book ends for Oldenburg’s Holidays Under the Spires, to be held all day on Saturday, December 7th. “This community performance is the perfect complement to a lovely holiday event.”
This year, the festival will be presented with a few updates, according to Event Chair, Regina Siefert. “My co-chairs, Amber Cochran, Bill Rethlake and I, felt the BHF needed to be refreshed, so we dug up the original script and did a few rewrites…It didn’t flow as well as we thought it could. We are pleased with the end result and the addition of a dance component. The audience will appreciate the timeless carols sung throughout the Festival, the sing-along at the end, and the explanation of traditions from English Renaissance, some so timeless that they are still common today. And of course, the beautiful period costumes always make a splash.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring the whole family to this freewill offering event. Space is limited and seating is not reserved. The Boar’s Head Festival is great way to put you in the Christmas spirit. Music Director Bill Rethlake adds, “It's fun to be part of something so many people enjoy starting their Christmas season with… Sister's Chapel gives the Boar's Head Festival such a reverent atmosphere - I love it.”
Attendees are also invited to come early on Saturday the 7th to enjoy the many offerings at Holidays Under the Spires. This Christmas extravaganza begins with breakfast with Santa, and features specials throughout all the shops and restaurants in Oldenburg, a craft fair, horse-drawn trolley rides, and Christmas choirs and performances in the Chapel.
