A message from the principal
Happy November!
October was a great month at Dayton Elementary. Students continued to work hard in their learning, explored what it means to be responsible, and had the opportunity to enjoy some special events like our PTO sponsored Trunk or Treat.
We are looking forward to the month of November and the great things we’ll accomplish together. In the month of November, our school-wide focus is Gratitude. Character Strong defines gratitude as “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” We have many things to be grateful for in our community. As a school, we are excited to honor and show our gratitude to our Veterans. Please see the information linked about how we are honoring the Veterans we know in our Dayton community. Click here to view the letter.

Kindergarten Family Connection
I continue to be extremely grateful to serve as your partner in your child’s education. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to make your student’s school experience even better at Dayton Elementary.

Picture Retake Day Q&A
Thursday, November 16
Should I return my picture packet? Yes, have your student bring either their proof sheet or their picture packet to the photographer before pictures are taken. This helps us to ensure the student receives the correct photos after retake day!
Do I have to pay for a new packet if we already received one? No, you do not need to pay for a new packet. When students bring their old packages back, it is like 'returning' the old one, and you will receive a new one free of charge!
How do I order? Go to mylifetouch.com and use this code, EVTN7ZMS2, open from now until the night before picture day! Once that code is closed, we recommend waiting until the proof packet arrives and using the unique portrait ID and access code listed on there to order pictures online! Alternatively, if you choose to pay with cash or check, you can send the money in the envelope with your student to the school on picture retake day!
Questions? Call Lifetouch directly at 1-800-736-4753.

November Specialists Highlights
Art
Project Highlight: Fifth Grade Shoes
This trimester, fifth graders are exploring Realism. Realism is an art movement where artists use their skills to depict people, animals, places, and objects as accurately to real life as possible. There is a misconception that the ability to create realistic images is the “best” or “highest” ability in art. But this isn’t true! It’s one of many skills that an artist can have in order to create beautiful, thought-provoking, and powerful work.
CORE
During Core this month students will continue to work on their technology skills. Kindergarten and first are working on using iPads correctly including closing them down. 3rd grade will review their research skills using E-resources and then type their information into a google Doc they create. 4th grade will review and then use additional tools on the google presentations they are working on in class. 5th grade is learning to work with google sheets, completing patterns and using the function key to add and average columns and to create graphs.
Explorations
All grades have been busy exploring the world around them through hands-on investigations and group work! Kindergarteners will start to focus on Living and Nonliving things. First graders will continue their study of plants and dive into comparing seedlings and their parents. Second grade is testing and classifying materials by their characteristics (hard, soft, flexible, rough, smooth). They will build towers out of different materials to determine which is stronger. Third Graders are currently working on their Ultimate Playground unit and will continue exploring force and motion. Our fourth graders have finished up their unit in Government and are now working on Geography with a focus on Spatial Thinking and reading different types of maps.
5th grade finished up their Early Civilizations in North America and have begun a unit on explorers.
Library
Students in grades K-2 have learned about the Star of the North book award. This is a book award specific to Minnesota. Each year, 10 books are nominated for the award. During our library class time, we will read these books. After we have read at least 8 of the 10 books, students will get to vote for their favorite one. The winner will be announced in the spring!
Students in grades 3-5 have learned about the Maud Hart Lovelace book award. This award is also specific to Minnesota. Each year, 10 books are nominated. Any student in grades 3-5 who reads at least 3 of the 10 books can vote for their favorite book, and the winner will be announced in the spring. In addition, Dayton students who read at least 9-10 of the nominated books, and complete a book reflection sheet can earn a pizza party! All reflection sheets need to be signed and turned in to Mrs. Ridlehoover by the time we vote in March. Ask your child what book they are excited to read!
Music
Time to order recorders for 4th and 5th graders! Students and families have been sent information via email. Here is the information regarding recorders. Fifth graders went to Orchestra Hall on October 25!
PhyEd
Happy Fall!
Gym shoes please!
Cardio unit is wrapping up as we still work on teambuilding and working together. GHOST BUSTERS is a favorite and will be a topic of conversation!
I will start soccer skills and move into tumbling at the end of November!

Bus app: FirstView bus app
Anoka-Hennepin families have access to their students’ bus routes through the FirstView bus app. The app monitors regular school bus routes in real-time. And, it’s free for parents/guardians and students.
While Anoka-Hennepin buses have an excellent on-time performance record, inclement weather, traffic delays, and driver shortages may impact routes. The FirstView bus app provides bus arrival times, anticipated length of any delay, an estimated arrival time and if a substitute bus is being used on the route. Email, push and/or text notifications can inform families of such information instantly.
Go to ahschools.us/busapp to learn more or download FirstView from the Apple or Android app stores.
