Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
September 25th-29th
What's Going On This Week
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will complete our final Light lesson: Lesson 4 "How does light move through objects?" On Wednesday, students will get their Light Unit Study Guide. The final Light unit test will be on Wednesday, October 4th.
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will continue our unit on Explorers. Because there is so much information, we will be splitting the unit into two smaller mini-units. The first one will cover Leif Eriksson, Ferdinand Magellan, and Christopher Columbus. We will take 2 weeks to cover these three explorers, and our unit test on them will be on Friday, October 6th. A study guide will go home Friday, September 29th.
- Mrs. Thurston's ELA/Math: This week we are continuing our first Lucy Calkins unit, Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, and diving deep into studying characters. We will continue learning how to think deeply about characters while reading our new novel, Tiger Rising. In writing, this week we are continuing our Realistic Fiction/Narrative unit by drafting and revising with an eye toward believability. Take a peek at your child's writing! They are all turning into something awesome! Spelling words were given last Monday and the first spelling test will be Friday. This week in math we will start subtraction! Students should be taking their notebooks home every night to review concepts taught in class. Subtraction quiz on Friday.
- Ms. Harris' GT ELA/Math: This week in reading, students will start a new novel by our new author of the month, Kate DiCamillo. We will also be analyzing theme and how a story can relay a message to its readers. In writing, we will publish our personal narratives and present them to the class at our Author Showcase on Thursday. I'm VERY excited to read these amazing stories! In math, we will start subtraction with larger numbers and across zeroes. Students will take a short subtraction quiz on Friday covering what we work on all week in class.
