Kindergarten Class News
September 5-8 & 11-15, 2017
Welcome!
Thank you for taking the time to read our weekly classroom newsletter! I do my best to send out a newsletter at the end of each week although when there is a shorter week I typically won't send one out. I try to keep them straight-forward and to the point, including a few pictures, so they won't take up a lot of your time so please take a minute or two each week to skim them over. I briefly go through what we talked about in each subject each week, any fun activities we participated in, and list any important reminders or upcoming events you should be aware of.
Reading/Daily 5
The Kindergarteners have enjoyed learned the 3 ways to read a book which are:
- Read the words.
- Read the pictures.
- Retell the story.
After that, we talked about how to choose a "Good Fit Book" and that not every books is good for every student because we all read differently and enjoy reading about different things! The students were then able to go book shopping for the first time and fill up their individual book boxes. We were then able to start practicing Read to Self, the first "station" for Daily 5.
Math
We just finished up our chapter on sorting this week! The Kindergarten kids did a great job sorting objects by color, shape, size, and even by two characteristics (such as shape and color, shape and size, etc.). We are looking forward to working on identifying and writing numbers 1-10 next!
Social Studies
Responsibility has been our focus skill so far this year. This group of students takes great pride in the chores they are responsible for at home and for their "job" they have at school as well. We have also enjoyed the opportunity to have our school counselor come in and discuss listening and following directions with the class.
Science
Science has been all about living and nonliving things. We know that living things "grow and change" and have had lots of fun naming different things and labeling them living or nonliving. On Thursday afternoon, we went outside and made nature bracelets with living and nonliving things.
