Digital Newsletter for Chehalem Elementary School
October 2017
Dear Chehalem Families,
It has been an amazing year so far and we are off to a great start! Thank you to those who came to the Back to School Night. Hopefully you had the opportunity to hear about what your children will be learning this year and get to know the teachers better. Conferences are scheduled for the evening of October 18th and the afternoon/evening of the 19th for most teachers (no school on Thursday, October 19th and Friday October 20th). This will be your opportunity to talk about where your child is academically and address any concerns, as well as set goals. An online conference scheduling link will be sent to you soon.
As many of you have noticed, traffic at the end of the day has been extremely busy and backed up into the road. Students don’t get dismissed from class until 3:05, and don’t get out to the curb until around 3:08. The traffic line is much shorter by 3:15, so please arrive a little after dismissal (between 3:15 ad 3:20) if you want to avoid the frustration of the congestion. If you are in the line and it is a busy time, please pull as far forward as you can so we can get as many cars into the lot as possible. I have also asked that any buses coming from that direction be re-routed to come down 155th into the bus lane.
As a school, we have a word of the month that focuses on a specific character trait. Every Friday, teachers submit names of students who have exhibited that trait to be the Star of the Week. September has been “Kindness” and we have seen many children exhibiting this trait.
It’s such a pleasure working with your children. Looking forward to another amazing year of learning and fun!

Octubre 2017

BEAVERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT PILLARS OF LEARNING: WE COLLABORATE
**WE work and learn in teams to understand student needs and improve learning outcomes.
Chehalem classroom teachers have just completed the first round of Academic Proficiency Assessment Committee (APAC) meetings. APAC meetings are held every 6 weeks as a structure to address the strengths and needs of all students K-5 in math and literacy.
Classroom teachers, intervention specialists, counselors, and administrators come together to consider the following factors:
- Academic growth
- Strategies to increase student achievement
- Basic needs to become fully engaged learners
Working together, Chehalem staff discuss each child to develop instructional groupings and determine specific academic goals with the purpose of eliminating growth gaps for student cohorts and subgroups.
October 4: Walk & Bike to School Day
The beginning of the new school year is the perfect time for students and families to start creating healthy, fun and safe habits. Walking and biking is a great way to get to school on time, safely and ready to learn because you’ve had a bit of exercise. With more of us sharing the roads it’s important to know that safety is everyone’s responsibility!
As we travel to and from school:
keep your eyes and ears open,
slow down to 20 MPH or less in school zones and neighborhood streets,
watch for students at all intersections and follow the directions from crossing guards.
Remember we must all look out for each other and work together so everybody gets there safely!
Be sure to mark your calendar for Wednesday October 4, 2017. It’s International Walk+Bike to School Day! Register HERE! Let’s see how many people we can get walking and biking throughout BSD. See the website for more details.

Parent Referral for Talented and Gifted (TAG) Education Services
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.
Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.

Oregon Battle of the Books/Batalla de los Libros de Oregón
Battle of the Books will be starting again soon at Chehalem and we wanted to give you some information about what is to come! This year we will have teams from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade competing against each other within each grade level. The 3rd grade teams will be given a slightly shorter list than the 4th and 5th graders, because some of the books are more appropriate for older grades.
Students need to form their groups and turn in their team information by Friday, October 27th. They will have the rest of November and December and part of January to check out the books and read them, and then the battles will begin sometime in the middle of January. The battles consist of trivia questions about each book. We have multiple copies of each book available at our Chehalem Library, and the books can also be found at any public library. The book list is listed below. If there is an asterisk next to the title, it is not a 3rd grade book, and is only for 4th/5th grade groups.
The Beaverton City Library also hosts a special “Battle of the Books” book club and they have meetings that allow students to practice trivia questions for each book. More information about registering for the club and the different meeting times can be found on their website here:

General information about Oregon Battle of the Books can be found at their website: http://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/
