The Summary
- Sometime in the future there is a controlled society also know as the "community." In the community life is different for people there is no suffering, hunger, or pain. People do not know what color, music, or love is and everything is controlled by the Elders down to who you marry and to the Jobs you are assigned. A twelve year old boy named Jonas is chosen to become the next Receiver. Jonas begins to learn of memories from the previous Receiver who is called the Giver. This completely changes the way Jonas sees his world. In his household his family has to take care of a sick baby named Gabriel and if the baby does not get well he will be released. Jonas during his training learns that to be released is to be killed. The Giver and Jonas come up with a plan for Jonas to escape to "Elsewhere" and release his memories to the community. While Jonas plans to escape that night he learns that the baby Gabriel is going to be released the next morning. Since Jonas has become attached to Gabriel he brings Gabriel on a bike with him. After days of traveling they come across a mountain with a sled Jonas saw in one of his memories and slides down the hill with Gabriel wondering if "Elsewhere" is at the bottom of them.
Jonas
Jonas is a very impressive person for a 12 year old. He holds skills that many others in the community lack. Jonas is also very mature for his age and does not complain when asked to bear pain or complete a task given to him. Jonas shows lots of respect to the Giver and seems to have a huge liking to him.

Overall Rating
The Giver was a enjoyable book and was very detailed. The only thing I did not like is that it ended as a cliffhanger.
