Parent Newsletter April 2, 2021

Principal’s Message

Hello Knight Families,

Spring Break will take place April 5-9. When we return on the week of April 12, we will have exactly 10 weeks left in the 2020-2021 school year. April 14 marks the end of the second marking period and is also an adjusted dismissal day for students. You can find the schedule here. Please note that students will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m.

Last month we enjoyed celebrating homecoming and welcomed back a limited number of fans to our athletic events. We are hopeful that as COVID-19 numbers continue to decline and restrictions are lifted, we will continue to progress towards being able to participate in many of the events that make Kellam such a special place.

We are keenly aware of the activities and experiences our students have missed due to the pandemic. Our staff and student leaders are working diligently to plan events that will allow students to connect with one another and address the social and emotional aspects of high school. Our Spring sports season begins on April 12 and our clubs and activities continue to offer outlets for students to meet new friends and explore their interests. Please encourage your student to get involved whether it be virtually or in person.

Kellam High School will host summer school this year so please be sure to work with your student’s counselor to explore opportunities to recover learning or to get ahead. Mr. Filipowicz will serve as our summer school principal. More information will be communicated through www.vbschools.com.

I hope you enjoy Spring Break and that your student returns with a focus on a strong finish to the 2020-21 school year. Please continue to check the parent portal and have a discussion with your student about what supports they need to be successful.

Ryan C. Schubart, Ph.D.

Academic Excellence

Virginia Beach City Public Schools and Kellam High School believe a Signature Project can serve as the culmination of a students’ education within our division. This exciting project is completed with the assistance of teachers, mentors, and the signature project coordinator and is designed to showcase our students’ strengths, skills, and interests in a particular topic. Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate this knowledge to an audience. Most importantly, the signature project should apply student-learning to real life situations and experiences beyond the curriculum and school building.

For students enrolled in English 12, the student may use his/her Passion Project as a Signature Project. For students enrolled in AP Literature or Dual Enrollment, the project will be independent and student-driven. The project is not mandatory; however, we feel strongly in its value to round out our students’ high school experiences.

This year we are offering six $500 scholarships to students who share their projects. The application and presentation scheduling forms are linked below. We are also excited to announce that we received a grant that will allow us to create a designated space for students to work on their passions and projects. In addition, students who complete the project will receive a seal on their diplomas.

There are many things students are already doing that they may choose to share as their signature project. Please feel free to view the video shared with English students this year and contact Ms. McGee or Mrs. Hoffman with any questions.

Inclusivity

The Kellam High School Diversity Committee would like to thank all of the students for their contributions in celebrating African American History Month. To acknowledge your personal participation, we are honored to present various prizes to those students whose projects exceeded expectations.

Please accept your award as a token of our appreciation for the time and effort you committed to expressing the importance of African American history through dance or visual arts. Many thanks to you for being an important supporter of bringing diversity to our school and respecting this part of American history.

For these awards, students were selected based on their entry in the categories of dance, visual arts, and others listed on the website celebrating African American History month. The process of selecting winners included a comprehensive review of entries, a single vote by each committee member, and final approval by the administrative sponsor. Each selected winner met and exceeded the expectation of the contest and demonstrated the qualities sought in bringing positive attention to the diverse history of our country.

The winners are:
