KA Classroom Update
April 28th, 2017
Introduction
Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. It's been a great few weeks in the KA classroom. Spring is upon us and that means we will be going to the park on Mondays and Wednesdays. We will be looking for parent volunteers to join us on park days to help chaperone. A Sign-Up Genius will be going out to all parents within the next week. Our students have been having a great time learning about each others families and cultures with our KA Community Shares. If you haven't signed up yet but would like to, there is still time. Just click on the box below to sign up on one of our open days.

Writing
KA has been busy writing fiction stories with a specific focus on character, setting, problem and solution. As well as, focusing on developing the beginning, middle and ending of a story. We started the unit by discussing the genre of fiction. We read many books with clear story elements (character, setting, problem and solution) in order for the students to be able to recognize these within a text. Students then began thinking about and creating their own stories by telling the orally before starting to write. Currently students are finishing up their stories and we will soon move onto editing and publishing our stories! Keep an eye out for your authors’ published writing piece.
Math
We have just recently moved into the Kindergarten Mathematics Unit that focuses on Numbers 10─20 and Counting to 100 by Ones and Tens. In this unit students are working to clarify the meaning of the 10 ones and some ones within a teen number and extend that understanding to count to 100.
Next they will begin separating 10 objects from within concrete and pictorial counts up to 20, analyzing the total as 10 ones and no ones or 10 ones and some ones. They see two distinct sets which are then counted the Say Ten way: ten 1, ten 2, ten 3, ten 4, ten 5, ten 6, ten 7, ten 8, ten 9, 2 tens. Students hear the separation of the 10 ones and some ones as they count, solidifying their understanding as they also return to regular counting: eleven, twelve, thirteen, …, etc.
¡Creciendo (growing) en Español!
KA is growing really fast in Español. We continue to explore the language in new, challenging, and fun ways. KA explored the different means of transportation through make-believe theater. They simulated traveling and moving around the world in the classroom using the signs and commands in Spanish relevant to each transporte. They explored from the smallest ones, like the bicicleta, to the biggest one, like the avión.
Our new IB Unit: Growth - Crecer has us learning the names of the animals and investigating how we share the world with them. We enjoy replicating the animals sounds and molding our bodies to look like them. Moreover, we are learning how a pollito becomes a gallina or a gallo as they grow up.
Check out the pictures and, please, continue practicing our songs at home.
PS. Our next Anytime Anywhere Trip, México City (in the time of the Olmec) is scheduled for June 2nd, 400 BCE. Please help us make this adventure magical again. Sign up here or contact me directly irosado@brooklynprospect.org.
