Principal & Assistant Principal's Message
On Wednesday February 27, our 2nd grade team and music teachers hosted an evening for 2nd grade students and their families to share their learning in a new expedition this year titled "Let's Celebrate! A Study of Cultural Traditions Around the World".
The evening began in 2nd grade classrooms where students described their learning process with their binders and classroom process board. Students shared how they researched and learned from multiple sources and experts about different cultural celebrations and traditions. Students' final product was a display board on a specific cultural celebration. In order to create a high quality final product, students used rubrics, took feedback, and did multiple drafts for their display boards. In the classroom, parents saw examples of how students used perseverance and collaboration to accomplish their final product.
After hearing about the process, parents had a chance to view the display boards and hear from students as they shared their new learning and answered questions. Listening to each student present was impressive as they demonstrated new knowledge about celebrations and traditions as well as new skills in research, reading, writing, and speaking. Additionally, they showed such pride in their work!
To end the evening, each second grade class performed a song associated with a cultural celebration. Many students and families were wearing traditional clothing or colors associated with holidays and traditions which added to the festivity of the evening. It was also wonderful to see the collaboration between our 2nd grade team and our music specialists.
What struck me most during the event was the excitement and energy from students and their families about sharing their culture with each other. The diversity of Springville K-8 is an incredible asset, and the event reminded me again about how important it is to recognize and celebrate that diversity. The evening was a wonderful opportunity to deepen our learning about the students and families in our school.
And finally, last week we welcomed students and families into our school for spring conferences. We had a chance to sit in on some conferences and hear students reflect on their learning goals and share their work with their parents. We greatly value this time with students and families as it presents an opportunity for dialogue about the learning journey, what has been accomplished thus far and the work that lies ahead in the coming months. We appreciate parents making time for these conferences in their schedules as we see the home/school partnership as invaluble.
Many thanks for all of your support --
Robin & Ellen

PTO Technology Campaign for Springville
Springville K-8 School opened in the fall of 2009 equipped with high quality instructional technology systems, including ceiling mounted projectors, built-in audio amplification systems, touch-sensitive interactive whiteboards, and iMac desktop computers in every room. Now, nine years later, it’s time for Springville K-8 to upgrade its instructional technology systems.
The original systems are showing their age; they are slow and difficult to use by today’s standards. Much equipment, including the classroom projection systems, are worn out. Instructional methods and practices have evolved, new mobile devices have been adopted, and instructional technology systems are capable of doing more than ever.
Beginning last spring, the Springville K-8 Technology Committee has been researching the direction the school will take in the deployment of classroom presentation systems. After several pilots in classrooms and reviewing the research findings, the Technology Committee has made a recommendation that Springville K-8 adopt a standard platform for its classroom presentation systems, consisting of a wall- or mobile-cart-mounted large screen monitor (flat panel display) and A/V streaming from Apple and Chrome devices. The new platform will be phased-in over time as funding is made available. The dated promethean board/ceiling mounted projection systems will be phased out as new systems are installed.
We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive Springville Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that has agreed to help with a technology fundraising campaign. You will be receiving a letter in the mail regarding how you can help support this campaign. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about our technology project and the upgrades we are making to our wonderful school!
Attendance Reminders
Safety Updates for Arrival & Dismissal
- Please only drop students off curbside. We do not want students walking around cars to get on the sidewalk.
- Do not drop off students in the middle of the parking lot. This section is only for parking and walking students to the front door.
- For drop off, please pull your car all the way forward to keep traffic moving.
- Students are running across Joss Avenue and between cars. Please help ensure that students only cross Joss Ave. in the crosswalks.
- At afternoon dismissal, please do not mark in the no parking zones near the entrance to our staff parking lot as well as directly across from this entrance. Our buses need that space to safely enter and exit the parking lot.
DISTRICT NEWS
School Board Passes Resolution Authorizing Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a 5-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools.
2018-2019 School Calendar
Just a reminder… The start date for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, August 27, 2018. This information was first published in June 2016 following the announcement of collaboration time and the addition of nine student days over three years.
Starting before Labor Day is a change in practice, so we want to make sure parents are aware. Please download the calendar below, or visit the District calendar webpage to view other important dates and calendars in several other languages.
BSD Response to Possible Student Walk-outs
The February 14, 2018 Florida school shooting has ignited a national discussion regarding school safety and the rights of staff and students to learn and work in a safe environment. As a result, several events are being promoted through the media, including national school walk-outs on March 14 and April 20.
The Beaverton School District has provided guidance to staff to prepare for these events, with student and staff safety as the priority. It is important for all students to feel safe and supported. Staff have been directed to develop a supervision plan for students who choose to participate in student-initiated events, as well as students who choose not to participate.
School attendance will be taken before and after the events. Students may not leave campus and must follow school protocols. Should they choose otherwise, they will be unsupervised and unexcused. Instruction will continue during any walk-out events. Staff will not participate in walk-outs, except to provide supervision.
We understand parents may wish to show their support for students. We ask that you gather on sidewalks or public spaces, rather than on school property. If you choose to go on campus or enter the school building, you will be required to follow all visitor/volunteer check-in processes.
Enrolling for Kindergarten 2018-2019
