L-3 Tour
Thanks to the folks at L-3, I was able to take 12 students to tour the L-3 plant in Greenville on Thursday, 2/18. Students were taken behind the scenes are were able to see some pretty cool and amazing things. One of the favorite was watching a couple of students control a camera that mounts in a turret under an airplane. While this actual camera wasn't mounted on a plane, it was cool to see how they actually work. One of the examples they showed was an airplane two miles in the sky using a camera to clearly read the name and call number on a ship sailing in the ocean. Our students also met with L-3 engineers who gave advice on what they need to do if they want to pursue a career in engineering. Because L-3 doesn't allow visitors to bring cameras, I don't have any pictures. McDonald's does allow cameras, so I've posted some pics of the students enjoying their 2nd favorite part of the trip...........LUNCH (although for middle school kids, lunch is probably the favorite part of the day)
What Is Strike Free?
You'll see from the weekly schedule below that we have "strike free" parties scheduled for this week. Students that are "strike free" have received no strikes (referrals) for six weeks period of time. We celebrate each six weeks with a party of some sort. This six weeks party, planned by a small group of 8th graders, includes an option of spending some time playing basketball in the gym or watching a movie in the auditorium. I'll also have the concession stand open if students want to buy some treats. Students will be told tomorrow if they will be part of the strike free party. Students that are only strike free for the six weeks do not get free dress on the day of their party.
We are also recognizing students that were strike free for the entire first semester. Those students will get free dress/sweats/pajama day on Tuesday, Wednesday AND Thursday. That's right, students that are strike free for the first 18 weeks of school get free dress all 3 days.
While I'm a little behind in celebrating these accomplishments, i do want to make sure everyone knows how much we appreciate the students that come in and take care of their business each and every day.

Cool Things Happening in 7th Grade Science
Kudos to Ms. London, our 7th grade science teacher. Last week, her students were able to spend an extended class period dissecting chicken wings. The purpose of this lab was to investigate and observe a chicken wing to learn about the parts of a chicken wing, how these parts, like bones, muscles and tendons, work together and how that translates into movement. Students dissected the chicken, moved around parts internally and got a brief glimpse into how dissection actually works. It was awesome to see how engaged the students were in the very cool activity.
Ms. London would like to thank the flexibility of the 7th grade team. In order to facilitate the lab, we modified the 7th grade schedule for two days. it's awesome to see teachers working together for the benefit of our students.
