1st Grade Builds Community
THE SECOND STEP SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM K-8
As you know, in September we kicked of the Second Step Curriculum in all K-8 classes to further strengthen our social and emotional learning. Second Step offers weekly, age-appropriate virtual lessons for students to help them with a variety of social and emotional skills. These weekly lessons build on and support all of the great work we're doing at Ike to support our students. Combined with our schoolwide restorative practices and consistent PBIS expectations, we are creating a firm Tier 1 foundation for supporting all of our students' social, emotional, and behavioral development.
This week, each grade-level will begin a new unit. Please view the grade-level home links below to learn more about what your child is learning and how to support them at home during the second unit of Second Step.
Redesigned and Reimagined Spaces
Since 2018 the focus of our professional development in Fraser has been centered on Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL focuses on three main areas: classroom and environmental design; culturally responsive design; and design for executive function.
Using funds set aside in the 2017 bond, new furniture was selected to redesign the physical space in tall K-6 classrooms. At Twain this transformation was completed this year as flexible furniture found its way into our kindergarten and second-grade classrooms.
The new furniture is flexible and most have white board surfaces. Students were excited to try out the different seating and learning areas. The furniture is designed to engage and motivate, and allows students to thrive, participate and become expert learners.

Lunch with Mr. Tonn
On Friday, October 14th our top 11 earners from the Walk-a-Thon joined Mr. Tonn for lunch. Everyone enjoyed McDonald's and the games that followed.
Solid Gold Shout Outs!
The following students are receiving Solid Gold Shout Outs from our teachers for their ROCKS behaviors last week:
Adyn LeFebvre (5th): Adyn is always so kind and helpful in class. Every day he makes sure that all of our seats are up so our floor can be cleaned. He is always willing to help a fellow classmate with work and he encourages others on the kickball field every day! Adyn is a true RockStar! - Mrs. Lombard
Jocelyn Winter (5th): Jocelyn is so organized and cooperative. Her work in incredibly well done and always on time. She is a fantastic teammate when students work together on projects and she participates often in class. Way to go, Jocelyn!- Mrs. Lombard
Halloween Around Twain
- Parade: A short "Halloween Parade" will take place beginning at 10:00AM on Monday, October 31st. Weather permitting, we will parade out the main doors and around the building. Our Y5s & kindergarten students will lead the parade around each classroom and then out around the building. All are welcome to come and watch our costume parade outdoors!
- Classroom Activities: Classrooms/grade levels will be planning for Halloween activities and celebrations individually, either before or after the parade. If teachers request parent volunteers to help facilitate the classroom activities, all volunteers will have to submit a Background Check.
- Costumes: Students may come to school in costume on Monday, October 31st. They can stay in costume for the duration of the day. Costumes need to be school appropriate and cannot depict violence or excess blood/gore. No fake weapons are allowed in school (i.e. toy guns, swords, blades, etc). Costume masks can be worn for the parade, but not throughout the day. For costumes that have short skirts/shorts, leggings or pants need to be worn underneath.
StuCo Wreath Fundraiser
Twain's Stundent Council is once again hosting a Wreath Fundraiser. This has always been a very successful fundraiser for our student council and the wreath products are beautiful. Order forms were sent home with students this week. Extras are available in the office should you need them. Orders are due by November 10th and our delivery/pick up date at Twain will be Thursday, Dec. 1st (1/2 day).
*Please make checks payable to Mark Twain Elementary.*
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Oct. 24th – Oct. 28th at Mark Twain’s Media Center:
This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

The countdown to more Bookjoy is on! Catch you at the Fair!
THE BOOK FAIR WILL BE OPEN DURING CONFERENCES.

OUTSIDE FOOD AND BEVERAGE DELIVERY POLICY:
The District does not allow the delivery of food and beverages from outside vendors or fast food establishments for a student’s breakfast or lunch meal. All meals are to be provided by either our Food Service program or prepared at home and sent with your student. Outside food delivery is a safety concern. We do not want to have strangers and people that we do not know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. It also is a workload issue for office personnel. Managing multiple food deliveries during lunch time becomes an additional responsibility for our office staff. The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school. We will continue to follow our past practice of making sure students receive lunch if they forget to bring one from home.
Thank you for your understanding and assistance in this matter.
