Stairway to Heroin Presentation / Escalera a la heroína
Please click here for information about a FREE upcoming important event, Stairway to Heroin on October 25, 6:30 - 8:30 at South High School. These events have been held throughout the area for a few years. They are usually highly attended, and we are hoping for a VERY large turnout. We will have a live feed into the library with an interpreter for Spanish speaking families.
The heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic is very real, and we need to work as an entire community to address it. Prevention is hard to measure, but according to SAMHSA and MetLife, "kids who learn about the dangers of prescription drug abuse from their parents were significantly less likely to use substances than those who did not." This is an excellent opportunity for community learning.

"S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk!" / ¡S.O.A.R. Como un Halcón!
S.O.A.R., as in "SOAR Like a Hawk" stands for:
Student-centered Opportunities for Academic Planning and Real-world Responsibility
On September 26, teachers met with their S.O.A.R. groups for the first time, and there were a lot of creative community-building activities taking place throughout the school. Did you know that Horning is the only middle school that utilizes multi-age groups of students during S.O.A.R.? This is very powerful and we look forward to seeing the positive impacts this year and in the coming years.
Please remind your student to always bring his/her iPad with to S.O.A.R. time, as they would be expected to do in any other class.
Many of the Academic and Career Planning and Digital Citizenship lessons during S.O.A.R. require students to use their device.
Thanks for your help in ensuring students are prepared and ready to engage!

The Horning Way- P.B.I.S. Information
WHAT ARE COOL TOOLS???
Cool Tools are Horning Way lesson plans used to teach, practice and re-teach our community’s universal behavior expectations.
They teach all the students what is expected of them and what that looks like. Throughout the school year, new lessons will be taught to all students. This will take place during S.O.A.R., but may also be taught as mini-lessons to be reviewed by all teachers during class. Selection, creation, and priority for which lessons are taught will be based on the Horning Way Matrix and Horning’s data.
Our first Cool Tool deals with Hallway Behavior, which will be delivered during S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk Time on October 10th. The major point made in this 1st Cool Tool is that students need to make decisions about how to use their time wisely to get to class on time. Students need to plan when to get their materials, how long they have to visit with friends, and students need to think about how their behavior affects others. So far this year we have greatly improved students getting to class on time. This COOL TOOL will reinforce the work we’re doing together as a staff and school community.
FOR THE GREATER GOOD!!!
As we give students Golden Tokens for following school wide expectations,
we have found some do not need or want a reward. For those students we have provided the opportunity to turn in tokens to benefit others.
For every 100 Golden Tokens turned in we will buy a Winter Coat. These coats will be distributed anonymously by Guidance to students in need.
Helping others: allows students the chance to make a difference!!!! Please take a few minutes to discuss this with your children.
Great news!
We have 200 Golden Tokens
That equals →Two Winter Coats!!!!
WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HORNING WAY??
PLEASE STOP BY THE ICENTER DURING CONFERENCES FROM
6:00-6:30, on October 26. There will be a short presentation followed by questions/answers.
And don’t forget the Hawk Classic, Saturday October 8th. Registration begins at 8:00AM.
Enjoy a beautiful morning as you run or walk alongside staff and students of Horning. Come bring the whole family!!

In Mr. Kuntz’s elective PE classes we just finished a unit in Flag Football. In 2nd and 3rd hour we had 4 teams and in 4th hour there were 6 teams. Each team had a “head coach” and their job was to draft their team as well as be the leader of their team. On each team everyone had a job that they chose based off of their expertise of football. The possible jobs were Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, Referee, and Media Specialist. Each member of the team had to play their part to help their team in practice and during games. I am so proud of all our teams and how they competed through the regular season and in the playoffs. Great job everyone!
